ABOUT OLIVER
Chief Dr. Oliver Sunday Akanite — widely known as Oliver De Coque — was more than a musician; he was a cultural icon. With over 50 albums and a career spanning 4 decades, he blended Igbo tradition with modern highlife, creating timeless sounds alongside his band, Ogene Sound Super of Africa.
Though a superstar to the world, he was simply “Dad” at home — warm, loving, and present. His son Darlington once said, “We didn’t see him as a celebrity. He was just our funny, caring father.”
His nickname “Oliver di ka Okwe” (meaning "Oliver is like the game of Draft") eventually evolved into Oliver De Coque — a name now etched in African music history.
HIS STYLE & SIGNATURE LOOK
Oliver was known for his royal presence — most notably his iconic beard, which he proudly maintained, spending ₦30,000 weekly. He often said, “If you choose a style, maintain it.”
HIS FINAL DAYS
In late 2007, illness struck. He battled diabetes and hypertension quietly, only recovering briefly before resuming performances in early 2008. Sadly, on June 20, 2008, he passed away. His son, by his side till the end, recalled his final moments — full of emotion, memory, and love.
Oliver De Coque left the stage, but his music continues to play on.
