October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, a time to honour the grief and loss experienced by parents and families, and to educate, and raise awareness for a reality that many endure in silence.

Early pregnancy loss affects many families across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Earlier this year, RANZCOG released its updated binational clinical guideline — Miscarriage, Recurrent Miscarriage and Ectopic Pregnancy (C-Gyn 38) — to support best-practice care, with one of the key changes being an updated definition of recurrent miscarriage. Clinicians can learn more about these updates by tuning in to Episode 1 of Talking O&G: A RANZCOG Podcast, where hosts and guests unpack the key recommendations and their impact on clinical practice.

RANZCOG is also pleased to announce the release of new patient information pamphlets on miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy, designed to support women and families affected by these experiences.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly improve surgical precision and workflow, with demonstrated success in phase recognition and anatomical structure identification. However, further research is needed to address dataset limitations, standardize annotation protocols, and minimize biases.

Nulliparous women undergoing IOL for indications such as large fetus, post-term pregnancy, oligo-/polyhydramnios, preeclampsia/hypertension, and diabetes are at an elevated relative risk of cesarean versus spontaneous vaginal birth compared to IOL for PROM. In contrast, the relative risk of operative vaginal birth showed less variation by indication for IOL.

Unsafe abortion remains a major global health crisis, with around 25 million unsafe abortions every year — one of the leading causes of maternal deaths and ill health.

Today, on International Safe Abortion Day, we reflect on progress towards ensuring accessible, quality abortion care that is safe, respectful and rights-based.

Between 2020–2024, the RCOG’s Making Abortion Safe (MAS) programme trained healthcare providers, advocated for changes in policy and practice, updated clinical guidance and developed resources to strengthen safe, high-quality abortion and post-abortion care.

Although the programme has concluded, the work continues through MAS Champions, who we hope will continue to advocate and train others to provide safe abortion care for years to come.
