ILOILO CITY — A heartfelt open letter addressed to social media personality Ms. Euleen Castro has gone viral, following her controversial critique of a beloved Ilonggo café. The letter, penned by a local food entrepreneur, expressed disappointment not from anger, but from a place of cultural pride and deep respect for Ilonggo traditions.
Ms. Castro’s recent review of Coffeebreak Café International Inc.—a 20-year-old grassroots brand embedded in Iloilo’s identity—sparked a strong response online, particularly for her use of explicit language in describing her experience. The letter, which has since been widely shared, called the language “violent” and “harmful,” noting how it cut deeper than mere food criticism, touching the soul of a community that reveres hospitality and tradition.
“As Ilonggos, we are not against critique,” the letter reads. “We welcome it—when it's fair, thoughtful, and respectful. But when language becomes violent, it doesn't elevate the conversation; it wounds.”
The writer, who owns The Happy Lemon Kitchen & Catering in Sta. Barbara, extended an olive branch by inviting Ms. Castro for a meal—offering their signature lasagna, creamy baked macaroni, and carbonara—while emphasizing that "carbs and courtesy" go hand in hand in their kitchen.
The message concluded with a reaffirmation of Ilonggo values: humility, kindness, respect, and pride in food and culture. Many online praised the letter for being a classy and constructive response amid the growing tension between online influencers and small local businesses.
As of writing, Ms. Castro has yet to respond publicly to the letter.
