When I asked my daughter what type of cake she wanted for her birthday this year, she told me she wanted a Minecraft cake - her brother loves it and got her hooked as well.

Unfortunately I didn’t have enough fondant to create all those little tiles (she wanted a 2-tiered cake tiled all the way around with the sword thing and the dragon) 🤷🏻‍♀️

So I asked her if she had a second choice. This was her second choice. She keeps me on my toes, that girl!

10K! I’m so excited to announce that we’ve reached this incredible milestone and I could not have timed it better! Exactly 1 year ago, Wattle and Orchid made its debut on social media. What a year it’s been!

I was going to post an introduction once Wattle and Orchid hit 1000 followers but here we are post 7K so this is long overdue!

Firstly, a very warm welcome to everyone! Hi, my name is Veronica - the one-woman show behind Wattle and Orchid. I’m a mum to 3 beautiful, boisterous children, a baker, cake artist, educator and business owner.

I started baking out of a need for better cakes. Too many times I’d see gorgeous looking cakes at celebrations and be left underwhelmed as soon as I tasted them. Looking around the room, I’d see plates with untouched frosting and half-eaten slices. Anyone else experience this? I remember thinking, it has to be better than this.

After countless hours of research, practice and dedication, I’m here to share my passion for creating visually stunning cakes that are moist, flavorful, and beautifully balanced.

When I first started making cakes, I thought there was just one way to place fondant over a cake - by rolling out a big piece of it and placing it over the top of the cake then smoothing down the sides from top to bottom.

It’s inspiring to see the work of cake artists now on IG and the very many ways fondant is being applied on to cakes.

Here, I rolled out 3 separate pieces of fondant - 1 to cover the top and 2 for the sides. I thinned the ends and tore some of it off to create that rough, uneven effect.

I’m learning to see the beauty in imperfection.
