This South-East Asian artist depicts the violence of domesticity with her video series, where she transforms her body into different utilitarian household objects, like broomsticks and laundry, commenting on the state of stay-home housewives, daughters fulfilling their filial duty, and more. Contrasted against a bright, cutesy, saturated background of candy colours, the work brings to mind pop-art and the concept of "violent cutesy", which was a pop movement in Japan in the late 2000s.

"When a visitor to ACMI’s Goddess: Power, Glamour, Rebellion exhibition walked out of the gallery and commented to a researcher, "There's still a really long way to go, you know. F--- the patriarchy", Dr. Britt Romstad, ACMI's Executive Director of Experience and Engagement, was delighted.

She knew that what visitors to Goddess took away with them from the experience was integral to understanding whether the exhibition met its objectives. This felt to her like an excellent start.

It is increasingly important for us all to be able to articulate the value and impact of the work we do outside of traditional KPIs and business measures. This work is even more urgent if we wish to advance an agenda of social change by amplifying traditionally marginalised and excluded voices.

Examining the critical reception and audience responses to Goddess, Britt discusses the challenges and rewards of being outcomes focussed.

Britt presented this talk live as part of Tessitura’s Innovator Series at the Tessitura Learning & Community Conference in Melbourne, Australia in November 2023."

More about the exhibition:
"When we think of women in film, who do we think of? Some might think of today’s biggest Hollywood stars, from Zendaya to Nicole Kidman and Tilda Swinton. Others might return to the forever icon, Marilyn Monroe, only hoping to recall her glamorous era of stardom. But for those amongst us who seek out a sense of familiarity from the silver screen, perhaps there’s no one quite like Michelle Yeoh, charting a path no one else has in an industry that favours the Western eye. Such is the subject of Goddess: Brave. Bold. Beautiful. the latest exhibition to have landed itself at ArtScience Museum, after an initial iteration at ACMI in Melbourne, Australia. Reinvigorated with an Asian lens, the exhibit seeks to take its audience through 120 years of extensive moving image history—only this time, it’s being done through the eye of the female."

Lisa Simpson, girl wünderkind is considered a feminist icon for her forward-thinking attitudes in a world of chaos, which she rules over with her logic and smarts. She's a q***r icon, and is the type of girl to spend her summers in Berlin experiencing the underground scene, winters on France taking writers' workshops and springs in Italy eating pasta by Lake Como.

An ode to the beating heart of The Simpsons, a role model to a generation of women—and to Yeardley Smith, who’s been bringing Lisa to life for 30 years.

Across 120 years of moving image history, Goddess celebrates the daring superstars who challenged narratives, defied expectations and transcended boundaries.
From Michelle Yeoh performing her own martial arts stunts and Anna Tsuchiya subverting the enduring stereotypes of Japanese cinema, to Laverne Cox championing the rights of marginalised communities, these screen legends possess inspiring qualities that are relevant to us all.

Featuring behind-the-scenes footage, sketches, and original costumes, including those worn by Marilyn Monroe and Chinese movie star Zhang Ziyi, Goddess takes you on a journey through the lives of the stars from classic Hollywood to the modern day.

The exhibition highlights cinematic achievements from Hollywood, Hong Kong, Bollywood and beyond. From martial arts styles that crossed over to American action movies and the impact of the golden age of Malay cinema in Singapore, Goddess demonstrates the legacy of film – that extends far beyond the silver screen.

Goddess was developed and curated by ACMI, Australia’s national museum of screen culture. This new iteration of the exhibition, created in collaboration with ArtScience Museum, casts a powerful spotlight on Asian film luminaries. It is part of ArtScience Museum’s Year of Extraordinary Women.

Across 120 years of moving image history, Goddess celebrates the daring superstars who challenged narratives, defied expectations and transcended boundaries.

The Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation Pushes Back from the Brink reveals this national crisis through the eyes of women. In an era when women have solidified their position as half of the U.S. workforce and a whopping two-thirds of the primary or co-breadwinners in American families, the reality is that a third of all American women are living at or near a space we call “the brink of poverty.” We define this as less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line, or about $47,000 per year for a family of four.

Forty-two million women, and the 28 million children who depend on them, are living one single incident—a doctor’s bill, a late paycheck, or a broken-down car—away from economic ruin. Women make up nearly two-thirds of minimum-wage workers, the vast majority of whom receive no paid sick days. This is at a time when women earn most of the college and advanced degrees in this country, make most of the consumer spending decisions by far, and are more than half of the nation’s voters.

In 2021, tennis star Peng Shuai accused Zhang Gaoli, vice-premier and liaison for IOC affairs for forcing her to have s*x with him at his house. She was detained and disappeared from world view for a period of months. This stems from the CCP's growng unease over the movement.
