I joined the parliamentary debate on the CareShield Life and Long-Term Care (Amendment) Bill today and spoke about the need to improve the accessibility and affordability of our CareShield Life scheme.

On accessibility, I raised the need to ensure parity between national insurance schemes that have automatic enrolment mechanisms. I proposed to provide a common age in which Singaporeans enroll into these schemes to prevent gaps in insurance for debilitating injuries.

On affordability, I spoke about how Singaporeans tend to be either over-insured or under-insured, which leads to policyholders paying more and increasing their financial burden over time.

I called on MOH to work closely with the Consumers Association of Singapore - CASE, to study insurance literacy in Singapore, and to work on improving consumer knowledge about how to best safeguard themselves against sudden, unintended, healthcare expenses.

Today, Coordinating Minister K Shanmugam Sc delivered a ministerial statement in Parliament on the fundamentals of Singapore’s approach to race, language, and religion.

Singapore enjoys racial and religious harmony today — but we are not immune to the dangers of identity politics. We’ve seen, even in recent years and past elections, attempts to bring race and religion into the political arena.

There will always be areas where faith and public issues intersect, and the Government recognises this complexity. Everyone is free to practise their faith and express their views on national matters. But the public and political debate must be conducted and decided on a secular basis.
All political parties must be clear: race and religion must never be exploited for political gain, or used in election campaigns. Once that line is crossed, we risk a destructive competition for influence among different groups — and Singapore will become deeply divided, as we have seen in many other countries.

I’m glad there was a shared understanding in Parliament today that we must handle issues of race and religion with care, responsibility, and respect — and continue to uphold the integrity of Singapore’s secular, multi-racial politics. This is how we keep faith with the ideals of our Pledge and remain as one united people, regardless of race, language or religion.

From 1 Oct 2025, Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) will roll out a QR code system to verify Halal Certificates, a proposal I first raised in Parliament in Oct 2023, where I referred to how our judiciary already uses a similar system for verifying Singapore court orders.

This step, prompted by my residents’ feedback and concerns given in 2023, would strengthen trust and consumer confidence. Grateful to MUIS and our agencies for listening and acting.

I’ve seen how much a child blossoms when parents, families, educators, and for some, the community – come together to support their early years.

From classrooms to homes, every story read with love, every question answered with patience, and every moment of purposeful play sets them for a good start in life. This Children’s Day, let’s celebrate the joy and curiosity our little ones bring, and the communities that surround them ❤️
