"𝑫𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒅𝒐 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒔𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆."
This saying, which The Big Sit has borrowed since 2020, has been attributed to Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh in his book "Peace is Every Step". Buddhist meditation teacher Sylvia Boorstein has also written a book with this quote as its title.
We more commonly tell others (and sometimes ourselves), "Don't just sit there, do something!"
Nowadays there is this pervading sense of rush and urgency to life, an obsession with busyness, a need to be occupied all the time... so much so that the idea of sitting and not doing anything in particular may be frowned upon and seen as unproductive and a waste of time.
The Big Sit advocates that sitting and being still is not unproductive, and doing nothing is not a waste of time.
In fact, slowing down, cultivating stillness, and being present with our experience is essential for us to become more effective as human beings.
We are organic beings that need rest, benefit from introspection, and thrive on true connection.
We need to slow down to go fast. We need to stop before we begin again. We need to pause to make wise decisions and skillful responses. We need to practice calm so that the mind becomes nimble. We need to sit and be with ourselves, so that we can truly be who we are - human BEINGs.
This Saturday marks our final Sit of the year. We welcome you to join us in just sitting and being in the Singapore CBD.
