âWeâre going to work, please take care of our son,â
Jasonâs mother told Jasonâs babysitter, Tatiana. Tatiana smiled and nodded. She carried Jason, who just turned 5, in her arms and rocked him. As soon as she heard Jasonâs parents shut the door, Tatiana put Jason on the sofa and left him there on his own.
âTake care of yourself, Jason. Iâll be upstairs!â
Tatiana told Jason. She walked upstairs into Jasonâs parentsâ room and shut the door. She was glad to be away from him. Children were annoying. Little Jason was all alone in the living room but he did not mind. It was time for his favourite show, The Piratesâ Cove.
âArr! Where be the booty?â
The main character asked in his pirate accent. The characters in the show were goofy and funny. The show was very entertaining to Jason.
âOh! Jasonâs parents are almost home!â
Tatiana noticed the time and rushed out of Jasonâs parentsâ room, down the stairs and into the living room. In there, she noticed a very strange sight but Jason was still laughing.
âHis parents will not know that I leave him there every day as long as heâs still laughing,â Tatiana thought.
She suddenly heard the main door open. Tatiana immediately turned off the television and scooped Jason up. She acted as if she had been playing with him for hours.
âWeâre back!â Jasonâs parents called.
âOh, hello! Jason and I were just watching television!â Tatiana lied. Jasonâs parents were so gullible.
âHello, Jason! What were you two watching?â Jasonâs mother asked him. Jason simply looked innocently into his motherâs eyes.
âWe will be having Show-and-Tell today about our favourite shows. Who would like to go first?â Jasonâs teacher, Miss Forest, asked the class. All of the students bowed their heads, hoping that somebody brave would volunteer to go first. Nobody volunteered.
âWhat about you, Jason?â Miss Forest chose Jason to go first,
âPlease stand up and tell us about your favourite show,â Jason sighed and stood up. He looked around the classroom. All eyes were on him.
âWell, my favourite show is The Piratesâ Cove. Itâs about these pirates who are looking for treasure. I like it because I think the charactersâ movements are very funny and goofy,â Jason explained. He did not expect words to just flow out of his mouth. Suddenly, a classmate raised her hand.
âI watch many shows on the television but I have never seen The Piratesâ Cove before. Are you sure itâs a real show?â she asked. Jasonâs classmates nodded in agreement.
âOf course itâs a real show!â Jason replied, offended.
âI canât believe she doesnât know what the show is! She must be lying about watching television!â Jason told his best friend, Mikael, at recess.
âI want to believe you but I also have never heard of the Piratesâ Cove,â Mikael said.
âYou too? Humph! Iâll show you! Iâll record a whole episode!â Jason said. He could not believe they did not know what The Piratesâ Cove was.
When Jason got back home, Tatiana was in his parentsâ room. His parentsâ were not home yet either, as usual. He dumped his bag on the floor as soon as he got home and ran into his room to find his camera. He rummaged through his drawers and cupboards. The camera was not in there. After a whole hour of searching for his camera, Jason finally found it under his bed. He ran into the living room and looked at the time.
âPhew, Iâm just in time for The Piratesâ Cove!â Jason thought. He turned on the television and clicked the âRecordâ button.
âAhoy, sailors! Today, we are going to raid an island!â said the main character.
âHm, thatâs strange. I thought this show was only about finding treasureâŠâ Jason mumbled to himself. Yet, he continued watching. The main character and his crew members sailed to an island and raided the islandâs resources. When the villagers tried to stop them, they captured them and made them walk the plank. That scene was particularly scary.
âI wish somebody was here to watch it with meâŠâ Jason thought. When the show ended, he stopped recording and turned off his camera. He put it in his bag and started doing his school homework.
The next day, at recess, he showed the recording to his classmates.
âSee? This is a real show! Look, this is the main character and these are the crew,â Jason explained to his classmates. He did not notice his friendsâ shocked looks and wide eyes. After the recording, all of Jasonâs classmates backed away from him and went to the basketball court. Even Mikael left him. âStrange,â Jason thought.
At home, he changed into his pajamas and went into the living room.
âTime for The Piratesâ Cove!â Jason flopped onto the sofa and got ready for the show. He then heard his parents coming home from work. They were quite early. Tatianaâs footsteps boomed as she thundered down the stairs. She was sweating by the time she was beside Jason.
âIâll get going now! Bye!â Tatiana slipped out of the door, glad to get away from Jason and his parents.
âFather, Mother, come watch The Piratesâ Cove with me!â Jason called to his parents. They decided to watch it with him as they had never really spent much time with him.
âItâs starting!â Jason exclaimed, excited. âLook! See? Thatâs my favourite character!â Jason pointed. What his parents saw scared them.
They saw a big, dark screen.
