Fresh Voices, Bold Visions: Meet the 2025 President’s Young Performers spotlights three of Singapore’s brightest young talents with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Saxophonist Dante Tan explores the colours of Tomasi’s concerto, harpist Renee Yadav unveils the elegance and intensity of Debussy’s Danses sacrée et profane, and clarinettist Chua Jay Roon embraces the fiery spirit of Nielsen’s concerto. Together, their performances reflect courage, creativity, and the promise of tomorrow’s music.

"I grew up watching the SSO, and to think that I get to perform with them soon is beyond my wildest imagination... My artistic voice is always evolving. As I’ve grown older, I prioritise bringing out the emotions in a piece. Making a connection with the audience is the most fulfilling part of being a musician,” - Renee Yadav.

The Band Post speaks to Viskamol Chaiwanichsiri on blending Thai soundscapes with contemporary wind music, tracing his journey from Mahidol to UMKC, and how inspirations, awards, and community initiatives are shaping his voice as one of Asia’s most exciting emerging composers.

"My main inspiration comes from my experience playing in wind bands and my youthful ambition. As Asian musicians trained on Western instruments, we have studied the Western tradition of performance practice. But I wonder what would it be like if the exchange worked the other way around? Many composers in Asia are now having their works performed in Western countries, and perhaps our ambitions are beginning to bear fruit, contributing to this beautiful cultural exchange."

Hirokazu Amakasu, conductor of the Kanagawa University Symphonic Band and music director of the Yamamomo Symphonic Band, believes in lifelong learning where teaching is also learning. He treasures moments of unity between performers, conductor, and audience, from the Tokyo Olympics to the recent APBDA Conference in Singapore. Rooted in Japan’s tradition of valuing harmony over individuality, he sees music as a bridge that transcends borders.

"Compared to when I was a student 30 years ago, the world has changed dramatically. If, through music, young people can interact, transcend language and culture, and help build a more harmonious world, nothing could make me happier."

Malaysian composer Yeo Chow Shern weaves Southeast Asian traditions into the wind band repertoire, blending heritage with modern expression. From What is a Tree? to The Winds of Yong Peng, his works reflect culture, nature, and identity. In this interview, he shares his journey, inspirations, and artistic vision.

"At this moment, I would describe my compositional style as a balance between tradition and modernity.... What I hope listeners recognise across my works is a sincerity of expression, where each piece reflects something meaningful, whether drawn from tradition, nature, or everyday life."
