Thank you, President Tharman, for mentioning Studio59 Concepts in your opening speech at the Spring Reception for Singaporeans in Belgium.

Although we are based in Singapore and not in Schiedam, we greatly appreciate the city’s hospitality and the warm support from Singaporeans in the Netherlands during the filming of our independent movie, Salam Gembira, in 2023.

It is truly sad that Filmgarde Cineplexes has closed its doors.

Local independent filmmakers have always faced challenges getting our works screened at mainstream cinemas in Singapore. Filmgarde supported us throughout our filmmaking journey by showcasing all our independent films, Konpaku (2019), Not My Mother's Baking (2020), and most recently, Salam Gembira (2024). For this, we are truly grateful.

Thank you, Filmgarde, for the valuable memories and for helping us grow as independent filmmakers.

Dear Friends,

We lit up our first cinema screen back in 2007 when we knew absolutely nothing about what we were getting into.

It has been an absolute journey marked by non-stop learning, countless memorable occasions, and even little moments of pride that helped keep us going over the years! (Ps: We are still super proud that we were the only cinema in Singapore to screen the critically acclaimed Oscar-winning film ROMA with director Alfonso Cuarón in attendance because of our cinematic sound and projection standards! )

But we could not have done this all by ourselves and we have been especially humbled by, and grateful for the support that our team, audiences and partners have so graciously given us during this cinematic journey of ours. Thank you for believing in us, for holding our hands and for embracing us and our little cinemas.

We have been awestruck by the international and local talent that have come through our doors and have been empowered and inspired by the conversations that have taken place within our spaces.

We have been moved by the dedication and determination of our local film community towards their profession and craft and have been privileged to screen some of the most captivating local films exclusively at our theatres.

Over the past 18 years, we have experienced first-hand the power of cinema as we laughed, cried, shuddered, wondered, and celebrated with you over the thousands of wonderful films that have come onto our screens.

The cinematic experience at its best, can be cathartic and magical, and it is our hope that future generations of Singaporeans will continue to walk into the cinemas to feel this for themselves, and to encourage Singapore talent to keep making films, one step at a time.

We have dimmed our screens for now so that we may embark on a new chapter of development and adventure, with film and culture still rooted firmly at the centre of our personal mission.

Until then, please keep watching the movies, and stay tuned to this space!
