🤯 Nice way to cap off the year, at the Singapore International Film Festival!
"Mongrel" wins Best Asian Feature Film:
"From the opening shot of MONGREL to its very last, the frame composes a dense, shadowy and violent world, sculpting elements of stillness and movement, light and darkness, sound and silence, into a viscerally pulsing film body. It is an innovative and wounding proposal for the aesthetics of cinematic knowledge, which weighs upon us the savage, multi-stratified layers of contemporary slavery, through the dark labyrinth of forced migration, where survival and death lie side by side.”
And "Viet and Nam" wins Best Director and the FIPRESCI Award:
“From the glittered pits of a dark mine to the ghostly memories of a battlefield in VIET AND NAM, we are invited to dream up a world where the veil between the dead and the living is pierced, intertwining history, love, and loss. The rhythms and gravities of the world are allowed to breathe in each shot-rigorously framed, yet transcending mere naturalism. With a poetic embrace of light in the darkest depths, TRƯƠNG MINH QUÝ creates a profoundly resonant cinematic language of tenderness, wonder and desire.”
"An unclassifiable film that crosses borders and blurs the boundaries between labor and love, past and present, the tragic and the transcendental, and the limited and the liberated. Like its migrant characters, its mysterious narrative and language expand our understanding of the human condition through moving image. For its underground love story that persists in its placelessness, we are thrilled to present the FIPRESCI Award to Việt and Nam by Trương Minh Quý."
