Reconstruction of the painting of the Divine Couple from Afrasiyab (old Samarkand), dating to approx 660. The two deities hold animals on dishes in their hand - the god holds a camel, and the goddess holds what would likely have been a ram, based on comparisons to other depictions of the Divine Couple from Panjakent. The exact identities of these deities is uncertain.

The khagan's horseman (A kagán lovasa) is a beautifully illustrated book that tells the story of an extraordinary Avar warrior discovered near Derecske, Hungary in 2017. The man, nicknamed Kerény, was buried in full lamellar armor — the first complete example ever found in the Carpathian Basin. His grave also contained precious items that show his high status.

The book combines archaeology, science, and vivid reconstructions to bring the past to life. Readers can explore how researchers examined the warrior’s remains, and how specialists used this knowledge to build realistic, life-size reconstructions.

The reconstructed Avar warrior's kaftan was made from a silk produced by Kazar Bazar.
