Pulchrum Metallum is a work of a seemingly incompatible blending of aesthetics. Allan Zane has seamlessly merged the anti-music of TNB with KNURL’s mechanized, amorphous soundscapes, feeding the results through the L*D absurdity blender to create a swirling vortex of utter chaos.

I have just sent off a special parcel today.

What links these two - rather disparate - recordings? The book to the right provides the clue, in that both contain settings of Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Although I consider Tennyson a very great poet (I purchased the volume of his poems back in my teens - it cost me the princely sum of sixty pence!) I had never intended to do settings of his poems, or at least, not in the concerted way that I decided to do compositions based on David Jones or A. E. Housman, they just came about organically.

The earlier recording, ‘The Kraken’, was brought into being when Brown Sierra and I decided to do a further release of maritime themed compositions after ‘Thalassocracy’, albeit ones that though thematically related, wouldn’t stylistically have fit that earlier album. I wanted to give my inner 19th century Actor-Manager persona free reign, and this was the result. My thanks to Dais Records for issuing such a left-field release.

‘Ulysses’ was suggested by Digamma Cottage and it was only right and proper that such a profound poem should have received a much more complex and elegiac arrangement. That it was issued in Singapore by 4iB Records was an additional factor that made the whole project even more worthwhile, that and the opportunity to collaborate with AIMA on the Wordsworth inspired B side.

And why do I mention them today? because they are now heading off to the Tennyson Research Centre to be added to their sound archive, which for me is a very great honour.

SNM – ‘House Of Dolls’ continues along the same vein as the 4iB Sutcliffe Jugend release ‘S L A V E S’ (2016), but this time stretches and builds the music like never before. Consisting of 10 tracks or ‘Scenes’ that build up, twist and turn, the carefully crafted soundscapes tell a story, without words but instead disturbingly created through complex sound textures. Calm yet haunting ambient drone serves as the basis of the ‘story’, which eventually arrive at an unsettling end of cacophonous noise layers. The disturbed nature of each track is evident, accurately representing Kevin & Paul’s relentless search for a truth we are all too often scared to face. A must buy for fans of their more complex instrumental work.
