Feathers, folded paper and embroidered silk on a watch dial? Vacheron Constantin’s latest Métiers d’Art series brings together six animals and six crafts that rarely find their way into watchmaking.

A snake takes shape from more than 200 pieces of feather, while miniature manta rays are folded from Japanese paper. Elsewhere, glass, gold-thread embroidery, cotton paper and wood marquetry become an octopus, tiger, crocodile and falcon.

Each artist had no more than 4mm between the dial and sapphire crystal, while also keeping the four displays of Calibre 2460 G4 visible. The results are wonderfully unexpected, just as fascinating are the challenges each artisan had to overcome every step of the way.

Here’s something suitably ambitious for a Monday morning: A. Lange & Söhne has encased its Triple Split in platinum for the first time.

The complication can record intermediate and comparative times across seconds, minutes and hours, extending its range to a remarkable 12 hours. Its familiar 43.2mm proportions now frame a rhodié-coloured dial with darker grey counters, blued rattrapante hands and discreet red accents.

Inside, the manually-wound L132.1 calibre brings together around 567 components and offers 55 hours of power reserve. Limited to just 100 pieces, this Ref. 424.025F is the 3rd iteration of Lange’s most ambitious split-seconds chronograph.

Another segment we genuinely enjoyed about this year's Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition Milano, was admiring the master watchmakers and artisans at work.

Enamelling, wood marquetry and guilloché are demonstrated up close; and for the first time in the history of Patek Philippe’s Grand Exhibitions, they even flew in one of their master gemsetters, who demonstrated how the dazzling bezels and cases of Patek Philippe are crafted in-house.

Step beyond the entrance and Patek Philippe’s Watch Art Grand Exhibition begins to reveal itself as a journey through 15 themed areas.

At the heart of the atrium stands a nine-metre interpretation of Geneva’s Jet d’Eau, formed from exactly 2,028 translucent sculpted glass 'droplets'. From there, the setting moves between recreated streets and lakeside views, as well as spaces inspired by the historic headquarters on Rue du Rhône, the manufacture at Plan-les-Ouates and the Patek Philippe Museum.

Even before stopping at the display cases, there is plenty to take in at almost every turn: architectural details, changing atmospheres and thoughtful references to the watchmaker’s Genevan home. Here is a closer look inside.

We can finally share this:
CROWN was invited to Milan for the unveiling of the 7th edition of Patek Philippe’s Watch Art Grand Exhibition, where we got a sneak preview at the international press conference yesterday.

Held at CityOval, the restored former Palazzo delle Scintille in the CityLife district, this is Patek Philippe’s largest exhibition yet. Beneath the building’s soaring 30-metre dome, more than 2,900 sq m unfolds as part museum, part immersive setting and part celebration of watchmaking at its most intricate.

Open to the public from 2 to 18 October, the exhibition brings together remarkable timepieces, rare craftsmanship and a little slice of Geneva in Italy’s fashion capital.

A collector nickname returns, this time officially. The Rolex Perpetual Padellone revisits Ref. 8171, nicknamed “Padellone”—Italian for “large frying pan”—for its unusually broad 38mm case in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Its modern successor measures 39mm and pairs an instantaneous annual calendar with a moonphase display featuring full and new moons crafted from meteorite. Inside, the new 5Hz Calibre 7190 offers 66 hours of power reserve and requires just one calendar correction a year. Available in Everose gold or platinum, the Padellone looks to Rolex’s past without simply recreating it.
