AKI Connect 2025: Indonesia invites local and global partners to explore collaboration opportunities in infrastructure development 🇮🇩

AKI Connect 2025 was recently hosted in Jakarta by the Indonesian Contractors Association (ICA). This business matchmaking forum aimed to address emerging challenges in Indonesia’s infrastructure development and to attract both local and international partners through viable public-private partnership (PPP) projects.

Attendees at this exclusive event had the chance to connect with project owners and explore investment opportunities. There was also an exhibition area displaying innovative solutions and technologies for the local construction market.

“We meet at pivotal moments with shifting national priorities and reduced public funding for infrastructure. The role of the private sector has never been more crucial, yet the need remains immense,” said Muhammad Fauzan, secretary general of ICA. “Many parts of Indonesia still require better transportation, energy and essential facilities. This is where collaboration, innovation and strategic investment become vital.”

🌱 Several units of battery energy storage system (BESS) from JP Nelson have been deployed on construction sites in Singapore. Serving as sustainable alternatives to diesel-powered generators, the BESS 500 and BESS 300 are environment-friendly, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions.

The BESS system is highly versatile and can be used in a wide range of applications, from civil construction to residential and industrial developments. It is also suitable for non-industrial projects. For example, JP Nelson recently supplied three units of BESS 500HD to Singapore’s 60th National Day Parade (NDP SG60) event.

⛑ The 2025 Korea International Construction and Industrial Safety Expo (K-Consafety Expo) has concluded, drawing over 10,000 visitors and 184 exhibitors – a 39% and 15% increase respectively compared to last year.

The event is co-organised by Kintex Korea and My Center, with support from the Ministry of Employment and Labour; Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport; Gyeonggi Province; and Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency. It is said to be the nation’s only specialised exhibition integrating construction and safety technologies.

One of the highlights was the Special Underground Safety Pavilion, jointly organised with the Korea Underground Safety Association, in response to growing public concern over sinkholes and ground safety. More than 20 conferences and sessions – including the Smart Construction Seminar, Smart Construction Tech Day and Hyundai Construction Innovation Day – also created a vibrant platform for technology exchange.

đź—“ The next K-Consafety Expo is set to take place in October 2026.

Towering 359 m above the river and 35 m higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the newly opened Chenab Railway Bridge connects the Kashmir Valley to the Indian subcontinent by rail for the first time. Built by Afcons Infrastructure, this highest single-arch railway bridge in the world is situated in the treacherous Himalayan terrain.

Notably, It is also India’s first railway bridge designed to resist blast loads and has been engineered to resist seismic forces of Zone-V, the highest-intensity earthquake zone in India.

To deliver this iconic project, Afcons deployed some of the world’s most advanced construction technologies and equipment. The project also marked several engineering firsts in Indian Railways.

The new WR series cold recyclers and soil stabilisers from Wirtgen Group can be used for various applications – from cold recycling to the stabilisation of a wide range of construction materials, in processes such as soil stabilisation or consolidation in road construction. Unveiled at bauma 2025, this new series is available around the world.

The compact dimensions and low machine weight of the WR 200 X make it easy to transport from place to place. The WR 240 X strikes a perfect balance between machine performance and weight to assure high daily productivity. The WR 250 X is the most powerful machine of the WR series and delivers the highest productivity.

The three models have working widths of up to 2,400 mm, with engine power outputs of between 305 and 571 kW (depending on the model). The improved Duraforce milling and mixing rotor enables consistently high mixing quality and productivity under all working conditions and contributes to the minimisation of fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and wear.

As Singapore embarks on the next 60 years (and beyond), SEAC spoke to two young engineers about their career journey, what they love about the industry, and their hopes and aspirations for the future. Both are recipients of the ACES Young Consulting Engineer of the Year 2025 awards, presented by the Association of Consulting Engineers Singapore - ACES.

Dickson Fong is a senior structural engineer in the Buildings team at Arup. He has been involved in several major projects, including the Shaw Tower redevelopment, the Comcentre redevelopment, and the Mandai Mangrove and Mudflat Nature Park.

“In land-scarce Singapore, we’re constantly challenged to innovate. We’ve entered a new era where sustainability isn’t just encouraged – it’s expected,” says Dickson, on what makes his job interesting. “There’s a growing emphasis on circular economy principles: designing for disassembly, reuse, retrofitting and adaptability. Clients are increasingly receptive to these ideas, and engineers are on their toes to do better.”

Yin Shan Ho is a civil and structural engineer and project manager at Arup. In recent years, he has been active in the maritime sector. One of the major projects he worked on was the Offshore Marine Centre 2 in Tuas.

“[The maritime sector] is a fascinating blend of mathematical complexity and physical durability, especially when building in one of the harshest and most corrosive environments on Earth,” enthuses Yin Shan, adding that “as sea level rise becomes an existential threat for Singapore, the way we engineer maritime infrastructure must evolve. We need to move beyond designing for once-in-a-lifetime events, and instead look at statistical probabilities and challenge scenarios and assumptions.”

Yin Shan and Dickson also share their views on technology, favourite projects, and important advice for aspiring engineers. Find out more here:

đźšś Caterpillar has introduced its new heavy-duty Cat 980 GC wheel loader, which offers low fuel consumption with an on-demand fan, load-sensing hydraulics, intuitive controls and Performance Series buckets.

“The loader’s simple user interface, intuitive controls and excellent visibility make for comfortable and efficient operation, even with less experienced operators," said Frank Stadelmann, Caterpillar global product application specialist.

"New features to this model, like our Engine Idle Management System (EIMS), minimise idle RPM and fuel consumption to help deliver low owning and operating costs.”

Singapore recently completed its first polder, reclaiming about 800 ha of land at the north-western tip of Pulau Tekong. This is also the first time the country has reclaimed land below the mean sea level, via the empoldering method.

Compared to the traditional land reclamation method of infilling with sand to reclaim land above sea level, the empoldering method uses less sand. This has resulted in close to 50% of savings in sand used for the reclamation.

With the empoldering method, a tract of dry land below the surrounding sea level has been created by constructing a coastal d**e and a network of drains and water pumping systems, as well as a stormwater collection pond. Together, these features protect the area from rising sea levels and more intense rainfall due to climate change.
