When you talk about famous chicken rice in Singapore, the name Sin Kee will almost always come up. But which Sin Kee?

For years I always believed the real Sin Kee, the one that originated from the old Margaret Drive Food Centre, was Benson’s stall at Holland Drive. He is the son of the original owner after all.

Then I tried the Sin Kee at Holland Close. And I met Steven, who has his own story to tell. Apparently he took over the stall from the original owner before Margaret Drive Food Centre closed for demolition.

So which stall has the legitimate right to the Sin Kee name? If you know more, please drop a comment!

As for the food, what I love about the Holland Close Sin Kee is the roast chicken and the tau gay. I started paying a lot more attention to bean sprouts after my trip to Ipoh, and I think this is one of the best tau gay I have eaten in Singapore.

This is part 2 of our journey through Tasmania. In this second episode, we travelled from Hobart into Launceston and very quickly discovered why it is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. Thanks in no small part to its passionate producers!

We did part of the Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail, from Launceston to the northeastern tip of Tasmania, and met producers of whisky, oysters, sea salt, salmon, truffles, cheese, and had award winning wines. We had so many wonderful meals, including one at a motor inn that surprised us! We wrapped up the trip with a chairlift ride over a dramatic gorge and a final vineyard lunch.

If you’ve ever been on a self-drive holiday in Hokkaido or the Margaret River region of Perth, Tasmania will feel very familiar. The whole island is quiet, full of nature, and packed with fresh produce and seafood. We’ve always known Tasmania as a great destination for hiking and nature, but never expected it to be such a foodie paradise with so many stories to tell.

This is part 1 of 2 of our 7 - Day trip. In this first episode, we eased into Tasmania with cool-climate wines, went forest foraging, had a beautiful ryokan-like stay in the south and even got to make our own butter! We then made our way back to Hobart for a nature sauna, art, wine, and a very interesting dinner before checking into one of the city’s most elegant stays.

We just had the media preview of Hikiniku to Come (挽肉と米), Japan’s cult hamburg concept that has just opened its first Singapore outlet at VivoCity.

The name literally means “minced meat and rice” and that is the entire menu. One set, $27.90++. Three 90g patties of freshly ground Japanese beef, grilled over binchotan charcoal right in front of you, served one at a time.

You sit at a counter facing the open grill and watch the chefs shape and cook each patty to order. The hamburgs are fresh, juicy, and chopstick tender. The best way to eat it is to pick up the whole patty and take a big bite so the juices burst in your mouth.

The set comes with miso soup, a raw egg, and rice that is soaked in sake and cooked in a hagama pot. On the counter you will find condiments to customise each patty your own way: lemon salt, marinated green chilli, ponzu, Japanese pepper sauce. Rice is free flow and extra patties are $7.90 each.

Although three patties total 270g, I still felt the need to order two more to feel completely satisfied.

Only 28 counter seats. Walk-in only for now.

Soon Kueh or Dim Sum? 🤔

At $1.80 a piece, most people will say it's expensive for Soon Kueh. But reframe it as Dim Sum, and three in a basket for $5.40 suddenly sounds pretty reasonable. Funny how perspective works, right?

One Kueh At A Time (OKAT) specialises in just this one kueh, and they've been at it for over a decade. When I first wrote about them ten years ago, I honestly wasn't sure they'd last. Hawker life is tough, and not everyone sticks it out.

But Nick and Karen are still here, still making their Soon Kueh the same way. Patiently. Carefully. One kueh at a time.

Here is their story! https://ieatishootipost.sg/OKAT

Tim Ho Wan has brought in a 90 year old master dim sum chef to recreate four classic dim sum dishes that were all the rage back then.

And if you haven't been to Tim Ho Wan in a while, you'll be pleasantly surprised. They've just gone through a total revamp — fresh new look, updated menu, and a noticeable step up in the quality of the dim sum. We got to taste the nostalgic creations alongside the new menu items at the newly renovated outlet at Jewel Changi Airport outlet. Well worth a revisit.

Both the Nostalgic Dim Sum Collection and new dishes are available at all Tim Ho Wan outlets island wide. Happy Eating!

Chinatown Food Centre continues to hide a treasure trove of unique eats! Bao Zhong Bao serves up excellent soups slow-cooked in traditional clay urns, alongside fresh steamed seafood. And the prices are very reasonable too. Steamed fish and prawns come in at just $10 to $12, and they only use fresh seafood. The homemade chilli is excellent! Well worth a trip.

If you happen to be out west and craving chicken rice, go check out Ah Boy. It was recommended to me by celebrity chef Chef Eric Teo and I'm glad he did. The chicken is solid, but it's the rice that is really outstanding. Fluffy, fragrant, and full of flavour — it's some of the best chicken rice I've had in a long time!

With so many new China restaurants opening of late, it is getting harder to get excited. Everywhere you turn, it is another Sichuan or Hunan restaurant dishing out mouth numbing dishes. After a while, everything starts to taste the same.

So when I heard that Nai Nai Flavor 椿花奶奶 was doing Jiangnan cuisine, I was curious. The cuisine leans towards lighter seasoning and lets the natural flavours of the ingredients come through. It is closer to what many of us grew up eating, especially those of us who enjoy Teochew and other Southern Chinese dishes. The flavours feel familiar, but there is still enough difference to keep things interesting.

They have recently opened their first outlet outside of China at i12 Katong. After our first visit, it already feels like one of those places we will return to when we are craving something comforting. Well worth checking out!
