Shell commissioned four renowned designers—Raymond Loewy (France), Yusaku Kamekura (Japan), FHK Henrion (Great Britain), and Karl Gerstner (Switzerland)—to propose a new logo, aiming for a modern, versatile symbol to unify its global brand. Each worked independently, unaware of the others, focusing on simplifying the scallop shell for reproducibility across diverse contexts like service stations and tankers. Loewy’s winning design used a heavy red outline for contrast, tested in over 100 iterations for scalability. Kamekura and Gerstner explored custom typefaces, but their rounded forms felt dated. Henrion’s proposal, less documented, leaned on his corporate identity expertise. Loewy’s minimalist, textless emblem, finalized by 1971, prevailed for its universal clarity.
