*Sogbini chiefdom wins land dispute over Bum*

The long-standing land dispute between Sogbini and Bum chiefdoms in the Bonthe district, in the southern region involving the three villages of Kpetema, Matagelema and Balay came to an end last Friday October 24, 2025.

A meeting was held in the office of the Resident Minister, attended by the Paramount Chiefs from Bum and Sogbini Chiefdoms and their people, the Peace Commission of Sierra Leone, the security sector, Civil Society Organizations and media where a report detailing the outcome of the process was read out.

The Resident minister acknowledged that the land dispute between the two chiefdoms was a long-standing one and that a multi-stakeholder group involving the lands ministry, the ministry of local government, Statistics SL, the Office of National Security and others.

Chief John Abu urged the chiefdom authorities to inform their people about the outcome of the investigation which was published in the government gazetted on Thursday 10th October 2024 to give it the force of law.

An excerpt of the report reads: “In this regard therefore, decision is hereby given in favor of the paramount chief of Sogbini and his chiefdom people as the rightful owners of land in the conflict, and by the ruling thereof, they are entitled to take possession and use the opportunity to utilize and derive maximum benefits for the overall development of themselves and generation yet unborn".

It notes that, “all the villages in the said land including Kpetema, Matagelema and Balay will henceforth be in the rightful jurisdiction of Sogbini. All taxes including local tax from the affected villages are directed and paid to the Sogbini chiefdom administration. Sub- Chieftaincy elections are held under the administration of Sogbini Chiefdom. The people of the affected villages, as named above shall continue to cultivate the land for agriculture purposes on request

*APC leaders meet EBK in Nigeria*

The Publicity Secretary of the opposition APC has told Kakua Express that they visited former president Ernest Bai Koroma in Nigeria “to assess his physical well-being and his overall recovery process."
Speaking from Nigeria, Sidi Yayah Tunis said their visit will “set aside rumors about how the former leader is doing and his living conditions. This will also put the minds of our members and supporters at ease as to whether our former leader is in good health and state of mind."
Asked whether their visit had anything to do with the reported desire of the former president to return home, Tunis replied saying, “this is not the primary motive, but it is the broader aspiration of the leadership of the party to have him back home.” He described Koroma “an inspiration to not only members of the APC but Sierra Leoneans at large.”
According to Tunis, the government of Sierra Leone must do everything it can to bring back the former president in a safe and respectable manner and accord him all privileges provided for by the 1991 constitution. "I believe this will go to a large extent in uniting this country and easing political and tribal divides,” he said. He called on the membership of the APC and supporters to continue to be calm and law-abiding.
Officially, President Koroma is in Nigeria for medical treatment but senior officials in Nigeria have told the media in that country that the former president is there in the interest of peace in Sierra Leone.
The visiting delegation was led by the party’s chairman, Minkailu Mansaray.

*SLPP supporters protest in Pujehun*

There were unusual scenes of protest in Pujehun on Sunday 9. February, when the First Lady Fatima Bio launched the construction of a new SLPP office in the district. The mostly young protesters carried banners and placards calling for the long-serving district chairman of the party to leave office.
Since dates were announced for the lower-level elections in the party, social media forums in the district have been awash with calls for the entire party leadership in the district to step down and allow new players. Protesters on motorbikes drove through several chiefdoms shouting “Eddie must go,” a reference to the SLPP leader in Pujehun who also serves as Sierra Leone’s ambassador to Liberia.
Some of the protesters who spoke to Kakua Express accused the party leaders of being “greedy people, who are only interested in their immediate family members, leaving people from other families jobless.” They argued that there are other qualified members to run the party in the district.
Supporters of Masallay described him as an experienced hand who knows how to mobilize the people of the district in support of the SLPP. They point to the overwhelming support the party received in the last two general and presidential elections.
Meanwhile there are complaints about the lack of transparency in the conduct of the lower-level elections in the district. Mustapha Wai, a native of Barri chiefdom took to social media to say, “as it stands, there is preponderance of evidence that the chiefdom chairman for Barri in constituency 99 did not hold any sectional consensus meetings yesterday.”
In the same chiefdom, aggrieved party members sent a letter to the headquarters of the party complaining about unfairness in the conduct of the elections and called for all party members to receive their cards and be allowed to freely participate in the process.
