Sierra Leone has been working towards unity and stability, particularly after the brutal civil war that lasted from 1991 to 2002. The government has initiated several efforts to promote peace and national cohesion.
Key Initiatives for Unity
Bintumani III Conference*: In 2019, the government convened this conference, bringing together political, religious, and civil society leaders to discuss national unity and establish the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC).
- *Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC)*: This commission has mediated several conflicts, including disputes over land, property, and politics, and has played a crucial role in promoting peace and stability.
- *National Unity Agreement*: The agreement, signed between the Government of Sierra Leone and the All Peoples Congress (APC) party in 2023, aims to promote national unity and stability. The Joint ECOWAS-AU-UNOWAS Mission assesses progress made in implementing this agreement.
Challenges to Unity
- *Tribalism*: Ethnic divisions have fueled exclusion, distrust, and uneven development, hindering the country's progress. Tribalism has played a significant role in shaping the country's political landscape.
- *Ethnic Politics*: The two dominant political parties, the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) and the All Peoples Congress (APC), have historically been associated with different ethnic groups, which has contributed to tensions and conflicts.
Efforts to Address Challenges
- *Promoting Inclusivity*: The Unity Party, founded by Femi Claudius Cole, aims to bring Sierra Leoneans together and improve the country through education, health, job creation, and increased international trade.
- *Addressing Ethnic Divisions*: The government and civil society leaders are working to dismantle tribal-based political structures and promote meritocracy and national unity.
