Sierra Leone is facing a quiet but devastating health crisis, and the blame falls squarely on the current government. The UK has sharply reduced its aid to the country, cutting a £35 million programme dedicated to maternal and newborn health down to just £1 million by 2027, before it closes entirely.

This programme, run by charities including Concern Worldwide and Helen Keller International, has been a lifeline for hospitals, supplying essential equipment, training health workers, and ensuring access to blood and life-saving tests for pregnant women. It has helped prevent deaths from complications like pre-eclampsia and supported a health system that many hospitals still rely on today.

Experts say the UK’s decision reflects the government’s failure to properly manage and secure this vital programme. Instead of safeguarding the funding or improving accountability, the government allowed a critical initiative to collapse, leaving mothers and newborns at serious risk.

While the UK continues funding large global programmes and humanitarian crises abroad, Sierra Leoneans are paying the price for a government that has failed to prioritize the health of its people. Mothers and newborns cannot wait — action is needed now.

The National Civic Festival, scheduled to take place in Sierra Leone from 11–13 December, is being promoted as an inclusive platform for dialogue, culture, and civic engagement. However, the announced keynote speakers list has triggered serious concerns.

The programme features the President, Vice President, and senior officials of the ruling SLPP, yet the leadership of the main opposition APC is completely absent. This omission has reignited national debates about political inclusion, neutrality, and national cohesion.

Author and whistle-blower Dr. Idris Lahai has openly criticised the move, questioning the sincerity of the organisers and calling out Minister of Information, Chernor Bah, who is closely linked to the planning of the event.

🗣️ “This na a national civic festival yet the leadership of the main opposition party (APC) was excluded… When you return to civil society and start talking about inclusion, that will be the day you go get your share of humiliation,” Lahai wrote.

Many citizens now fear that a platform meant to strengthen democracy risks losing credibility if it appears partisan. At a time when national unity is urgently needed, should civic spaces not lead by example?

💬 What do you think — inclusion or exclusion?

Freetown, 9 December 2025 — My people, this new IMF corruption report is a wake-up call for every Sierra Leonean. Corruption is not just a government problem, it is something that is holding all of us back, every single day.

Between 2016 and 2018, Sierra Leone lost 10.45 to 15.9 trillion old Leones (USD 458M–698M) to corruption. That is more money than the entire country earned in revenue during those years. Imagine what that amount could have done for our hospitals, schools, jobs, and roads.

Every year, 12.7% of our GDP disappears because of corruption. This is why progress feels slow. This is why life keeps getting harder.

The IMF report also reminds us that injustice in how our gold and diamonds are managed has been hurting ordinary people for decades, even contributing to the civil war. Today, we are still feeling the effects.

The truth is simple: corruption is draining our pockets, limiting opportunities, discouraging investors, increasing debt, and weakening trust in our institutions.

Sierra Leone will not grow if corruption continues to eat the future before it arrives.

As citizens, we must demand transparency, fairness, and accountability from anyone who touches public resources. This country belongs to all of us, not a few people at the top.

If we want a better Sierra Leone, then we must all speak up, stay informed, and refuse to be silent.

Because when corruption wins, the people lose and we deserve better.

Sierra Leone lost a stunning 15.9 trillion Leones (about USD 698 million) to corruption between 2016–2018, according to a new IMF report.

This is nearly twice the nation’s total revenue of 8.8 trillion Leones during the same period. Public finances were squeezed, development stalled, and economic recovery was heavily undermined.

On average, 12.7% of our GDP was drained by corruption every year. That’s money that should have built schools, hospitals, roads and jobs — not ended up in private pockets.

This period fell under the administration of Ernest Bai Koroma, with the IMF engaging his government from 2007 to 2018.

Sierra Leone deserves better.

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗔 𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗗𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗔 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗗?

A seven-year-old girl, 𝗢𝗻𝘆𝗶𝗻𝘆𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗶, from Imo State lost both her parents and was sent to live with her aunt — someone who was supposed to protect her.

Instead… she became her worst nightmare.

This innocent child was accused of stᵗealing money, and instead of correction or care, she was 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱.
Her tiny hand pushed into hot oil…
A burning candle pressed on her back…
Both of her hands severely damaged.
A pain no child should ever feel. A trauma no human should ever justify.

When the truth came out, the Imo State Police Command immediately intervened.
𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝗴𝘄𝗲, 38, was arrested on December 4, 2025.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye called her actions “despicable and totally unacceptable.”

Investigations are ongoing, and charges will follow. Justice must be served.

Little Onyinyechi is now receiving treatment at the Imo State University Medical Centre, supported by a humanitarian foundation led by activist journalist Chidiebube Okeoma, who is covering her medical care and welfare.

This case is a reminder:
𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻.
𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻.

May she heal. May justice speak loudly. And may no child ever face this kind of wickedness again.
