The National Civic Festival, scheduled to take place in Sierra Leone from 11–13 December, is being promoted as an inclusive platform for dialogue, culture, and civic engagement. However, the announced keynote speakers list has triggered serious concerns.
The programme features the President, Vice President, and senior officials of the ruling SLPP, yet the leadership of the main opposition APC is completely absent. This omission has reignited national debates about political inclusion, neutrality, and national cohesion.
Author and whistle-blower Dr. Idris Lahai has openly criticised the move, questioning the sincerity of the organisers and calling out Minister of Information, Chernor Bah, who is closely linked to the planning of the event.
🗣️ “This na a national civic festival yet the leadership of the main opposition party (APC) was excluded… When you return to civil society and start talking about inclusion, that will be the day you go get your share of humiliation,” Lahai wrote.
Many citizens now fear that a platform meant to strengthen democracy risks losing credibility if it appears partisan. At a time when national unity is urgently needed, should civic spaces not lead by example?
