We concluded a village tour of 10 communities in Grand Bassa County, Liberia successfully. I represented the Africa Informal Alliance Against Monoculture Plantations Expansion and I will say it was timely and frequent engagement is needed to keep them alert.

Our Women are on the Radio discussing their own issues and chatting the way forward. We empower them to lead.

We are happy to see our women smiling with much hope for what the future holds for them. WoNARPI with support from the the Africa Informal Alliance Against Monoculture Expansion had a week long training and certification of Women from Portloko, Kailahun, Pujehun and representatives from our JUWEDO Sisters in Liberia in Gara tye dying and Soap Making in Bo City at the Haikal Training Center. As we continue to advocate for their rights and voices to be heard, we also want to empower them with an alternative means of survival. Their dedication to learn was impressive and our prayer is to train more women to help change the narrative.

As we celebrate Labour Day today, I want to celebrate our vibrant Rural Women who have been denied the right of being part of the workforce. Their lands which is supposed to be their workplace has been taken away by Multi National companies leaving them without access to their lands to do what they know as a job (Agriculture/Farming). Our Rural Women contributes greatly to what we eat, so let’s help save their Lands from being grabbed all in the name of development or job creation. Happy Labour Day my people, you are not idlers, you just need your office space.

Listening to the stories of women and amplifying them is one main reason why WoNARPI exists. We are in Malen Chiefdom, Pujehun District, Southern Sierra Leone to delve deeper into the struggles of women in Malen. We saw women who have been deprived, hurt and abused but still have faith in the future. Watch this space.

The year started with a series of events. From a Solidarity visit to our AFRISE Sisters in Cameroon to the Informal Alliance’s Facilitation meeting in Accra to a National Consultation organized by the Ministry of Lands and FAO , to a book launch on our Land laws by Land for Life Sierra Leone, to a solidarity visit to our JUWEDO sisters in Liberia. WoNARPI is appreciative of the opportunities.

What do the struggles of women facing land grabbing in Mexico, Sierra Leone and Indonesia have in common?

WRM is relaunching the podcast “Women’s struggles for land”, with stories from women’s collectives from the coastal area of Chiapas in Mexico, the Malen Chiefdom in Sierra Leone and the Kapuas river area of Central Kalimantan in Indonesia.

While their stories appear quite different from each other at first glance, we find many commonalities and a strong connection between them.

The violation of Women’s Rights.
