Massive Fire Engulfs Key Buildings at Sunbird Bioenergy Sierra Leone Limited

A devastating fire outbreak on Saturday, 30th May 2026, has destroyed two major buildings at Sunbird Bioenergy Sierra Leone Limited, leaving staff members, residents, and the surrounding community in shock and emotional distress.
The incident occurred at the companyβs well-known β46 Man Camp,β where one of the affected buildings accommodated several important operational offices, including the Audit Office, Agriculture Office, Fire Force Office, and Irrigation Office. The second building served as a residential facility for staff members.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fire spread rapidly and intensified within a short period, making it extremely difficult to contain. Despite determined efforts by the companyβs fire response team, workers, and residents to rescue properties and control the flames, the two structures were completely burnt down.
Reports from the scene indicate that at least five staff members suffered from smoke inhalation during the incident and were immediately rushed to Marah Hospital for medical treatment and observation.
Fortunately, no death has been recorded, and management confirmed that no major physical injuries have been reported.
However, beyond the physical destruction, the emotional and financial impact of the disaster has left many workers and families devastated. Several victims lost personal belongings, household properties, official documents, and valuables accumulated over many years of hard work and sacrifice.
Scenes of sorrow and uncertainty filled the area as affected residents struggled to come to terms with the magnitude of the loss.
In a press statement issued shortly after the incident, the management of Sunbird Bioenergy Sierra Leone Limited expressed sympathy and solidarity with all those affected by the unfortunate disaster.
Speaking on behalf of management, the Human Resources Manager, Mr. Ibrahim Jah Sesay, stated:
βThis unfortunate incident has deeply affected both the victims and the entire Sunbird Bioenergy family. We sincerely sympathize with all affected staff and residents during this difficult period. Management remains committed to standing with those impacted as efforts continue to provide support and comfort to affected families.β
Meanwhile, several affected staff members have appealed for urgent intervention and support from both the companyβs management and the Government of Sierra Leone to help address the immediate challenges facing victims who have lost shelter and valuable properties.
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, many residents remain hopeful that support mechanisms and recovery efforts will be introduced to help restore stability and hope within the affected community in recent years
