Makeni - January 10, 2025 - LEAD Sierra Leone held a meeting with five link teachers to plan for the forthcoming inter-school debate championship, which is set to hold on January 24, 2025, in Makeni to commemorate International Day of Education.

In his address, the Managing Director of LEAD Sierra Leone, Mr. Musa Kondeh, said the debate competition aims to foster critical thinking, public speaking, and leadership skills. He added that the debate seeks to promote healthy intellectual competition among pupils in Makeni.

Alhaji Mohamed Bangura, a teacher at St. Joseph's Senior Secondary School, stressed the importance of public speaking and noted that they (the teachers) will work hand in glove with LEAD Sierra Leone to make the competition a success.

Abdulai Barrie poises to transform student leadership at UniMak

For a promise is only as good as its maker. Abdulai Barrie, the current Best Orator at the University of Makeni, is set to change the dynamics of students' leadership as the chairperson candidate of the Students' Resurgence Movement with a dutifully firm desire to offer fresh perspectives.

Building his popularity on the mantra of being a supportive personality, as well as implementing developmental-driven initiatives, Barrie's political career is ennobled by a plethora of academic, social and infrastructural achievements, especially during his tenure as the president of the Political Science and International Relations (PoSIR) Department.

Highlighting his six-month successes as president of his department, Barrie led PoSIR to glory in both the Students’ Representative Council Interdepartmental debate and football competitions, where he emerged as Best Orator, as well as was Best Player of the tournament, and eventually clinched the top-scorer award.

Additionally, Barrie's achievements are visible and not limited to constructing a PoSIR garden and organising a memorable dinner ceremony that attracted influential personalities and generated funds for the department.

Beyond his department, Abdulai Barrie has impacted the lives of many students at the University of Makeni in diverse capacities as former Coordinator of the UniMak Study Aid and former Deputy PRO of the UniMak Muslim Jamaat to name but a few.

As a sustainable development advocate, one of Barrie’s goals is to transform the ‘donor-driven’ status of the SRC to a ‘self-reliant’ governing body.

With effective advocacy and good oratory skills, Barrie remains determined to give students a better representation and help the administration to create a conducive learning atmosphere.
