Knize-Bay Derulo Releases New Single ‘Marlians Everywhere’
By Eagleville

Abdul Mansaray, popularly known by his stage name Knize-Bay Derulo, an emerging musical talent from the eastern of Freetown, has released a new single titled “Marlians Everywhere,” an Afro-inspired song that highlights themes of love, and the expressive lifestyle of today’s young generation.
The song also expressed freedom.
The song, produced by Twice ICE, blends modern Afro rhythms with energetic street sounds, creating a track that reflects contemporary youth culture. Marlians Everywhere presents a narrative that celebrates confidence, loyalty, and individuality, while also touching on the carefree and adventurous nature of young people navigating relationships and social life.
Speaking in an interview, Knize-Bay Derulo said the song was inspired by the influence of Nigerian artist Naira Marley and the cultural movement associated with Marlian Records. “The Marlian movement represents freedom and originality. It encourages young people to be bold, to be creative, and to express themselves without fear. That idea inspired Marlians Everywhere,” he said.
According to the artist, the song is intended to resonate with young listeners who see music as a form of identity and belonging. He explained that the term ‘Marlians’ in the song represents a community of people connected by shared values, energy, and lifestyle rather than a specific location. “It’s not just about music. It’s about a mindset and a lifestyle. Wherever young people are expressing themselves positively, Marlians are there,” Knize-Bay Derulo explained.
Knize-Bay Derulo is not only a musician but also an active media practitioner and creative artist. He is currently a Mass Communication student at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, where he is studying Broadcast Journalism. Alongside his academic work, he is also reporting for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), gaining professional experience in broadcast media.
He noted that his background in journalism has played a significant role in shaping his artistic direction. “Journalism has taught me how to communicate clearly and responsibly. It has helped me tell stories through music in a way people can understand and relate to,” according to him.
In addition to music and journalism, Knize-Bay Derulo is also involved in the performing arts. He is an actor and dancer who has appeared in several theatre productions across Sierra Leone. His experience on stage, he said, has strengthened his confidence and performance skills.
The artist has previously released a number of songs, including ‘Pheona,’ which featured fellow musician I-Bangs. Those early releases helped introduce him to a growing audience and contributed to his steady rise within the local music scene.
With Marlians Everywhere, Knize-Bay Derulo believes he has taken a step forward in defining his musical identity. He described the collaboration with producer Twice ICE as smooth and creative, noting that the producer understood the vision behind the song.
Knize-Bay Derulo said his goal is to continue building his career while remaining focused on positive growth and creativity. “I want my music to inspire confidence and unity among young people. This is just the beginning, and there is more to come,” he stated.

MoH, Partners Discharge and Reintegrate Over 40 Kush Survivors
By Eagleville

Over 40 survivors of Kush, a highly addictive and dangerous synthetic drug, have been successfully discharged and reintegrated into their communities after three months of intensive treatment by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and its partners at the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Teaching Hospital in Kissy, Freetown.

Health authorities revealed that over 90% of the patients fully recovered, following sustained medical care, mental health treatment, wound management, and psychosocial support. Only four patients were referred to Partners In Health (PIH) Sierra Leone in Kono for further specialized care.

The discharge ceremony, held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, brought together government officials, health professionals, community leaders, families, and development partners. Each survivor also received a reintegration package, including clothing and essential items, to support their return to society with dignity.

Deputy Minister of Health I, Prof. Charles Senessie, described the occasion as a “happy moment,” noting that many of the beneficiaries were previously living on the streets without family support. He urged families and communities to take an active role in preventing drug abuse, stressing that the fight against Kush is a shared responsibility.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer (Clinical Services), Dr. Mustapha Kabba, said many of the survivors arrived in critical medical and mental conditions but recovered through phased interventions and community outreach. He encouraged the beneficiaries to become ambassadors of change in their communities.

One survivor, Matinda Isha Sheriff, shared her testimony, warning young people to stay away from Kush and seek help early. “Kush can destroy your life, but there is always hope if you allow others to help you,” she said.

The initiative is funded by the Government of Sierra Leone, with support from PIH Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Social Welfare, and the National Drug and Substance Abuse Taskforce, as part of the national emergency response declared by President Julius Maada Bio to combat the Kush crisis.

SLANGO Launches Digital Registration Portal to Transform NGO Operations in Sierra Leone
By Eagleville

The Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO) has officially launched its Digital Registration Work Portal, marking a major step toward modernizing NGO registration and operations in Sierra Leone.

The portal, accessible at www.slango.sl
, is designed to simplify the registration of new NGOs and the renewal of existing ones, improve document verification, enhance coordination, and ensure secure management of organizational data. The initiative promotes efficiency, transparency, and accountability across the NGO sector.

Speaking at the launch on Thursday, 16 January 2026, SLANGO’s National Director, Alice James, described the platform as part of the organization’s broader commitment to professionalism and improved service delivery. She noted that the digital system will reduce administrative delays, centralize NGO records, and allow organizations to focus more on their development and humanitarian missions.

SLANGO Board Chairman, Christian Martyn Kamara, described the portal as a strategic reform that transitions NGO registration from a paper-based system to a fully digital process. He said the platform will eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy, improve data accuracy, and provide real-time information for regulators and development partners.

Chairman of the Steering Committee for National NGOs, Ibrahim Kamara, praised the portal as a transformative tool that will reduce paperwork, shorten processing times, and serve as a central resource hub for guidelines, best practices, and NGO coordination nationwide.

The Chairman of the Steering Committee for International NGOs also welcomed the initiative, noting that it will strengthen collaboration among international NGOs, national NGOs, government institutions, and local communities, enabling faster and more effective humanitarian and development interventions.

Director of NGO Affairs at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), Eric Masallay, said the portal aligns with national development priorities, particularly in technology and innovation. He emphasized that the system will enhance accessibility, strengthen coordination and oversight, promote accountability, and support NGOs to focus on service delivery to vulnerable populations.

Representing the Office of the Chief Minister, Mr. Sheriff highlighted the important role NGOs play in complementing government services, especially in hard-to-reach communities. He officially launched the portal, describing it as a milestone that will improve efficiency, transparency, and data-driven decision-making in the NGO sector.

The launch of SLANGO’s digital registration portal marks a new era for NGO operations in Sierra Leone, strengthening collaboration among NGOs, government institutions, and development partners. Stakeholders are encouraged to register via www.slango.sl
and support efforts to build a more accountable and impactful NGO sector.

SLABOTH Launched to Strengthen Private Sector Voice in Tourism and Hospitality
By Eagleville

The Sierra Leone Association of Business Owners in Tourism and Hospitality (SLABOTH) has been officially launched, marking a significant milestone for private sector engagement in one of the country’s most promising economic sectors. The association aims to provide a structured framework, effective representation, and a unified voice for business owners operating across the tourism and hospitality value chain, according to its Chairperson, Ms. Ngadi Kamara.

The launching ceremony, held in Freetown on Thursday, January 8, 2026, brought together senior government officials, international development partners, and other distinguished guests. Their presence underscored the growing national and international recognition of tourism as a critical driver of Sierra Leone’s economic transformation.

Representing the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the Assistant Director of Tourism, Mr. Robert H. Leigh, officially launched the association. The event was widely described as a breakthrough moment for private sector operators who have, for years, called for stronger coordination, advocacy, and representation within the industry.

In her keynote address, Ms. Kamara—who is also the Managing Director of Hotel Barmoi—said the formation of SLABOTH reflects a shared understanding that tourism and hospitality are not peripheral activities, but central pillars of Sierra Leone’s economic growth, job creation, cultural identity, and international image.

She explained that the association brings together owners of hotels, restaurants, guesthouses, tour operators, venues, and service providers who continue to build viable businesses despite operating in a challenging environment. While the sector contributes significantly to employment, foreign exchange earnings, and community development, she noted that industry players often feel marginalized in national policy discussions.

“Our voices too often go unheard, our challenges unaddressed, and our contributions underrepresented,” she said, stressing the need for a collective platform that can engage government and partners more effectively.

Ms. Kamara outlined key challenges facing the sector, including regulatory complexity and compliance burdens, limited access to finance and investment, skills gaps and workforce development issues, weak infrastructure and utilities, and the need for consistent standards and professionalism. She emphasized that these systemic issues cannot be resolved by individual businesses acting alone.

According to her, SLABOTH emerged from informal conversations among business owners who shared similar struggles, ambitions, and a firm belief in Sierra Leone’s tourism potential. These discussions gradually evolved into structured meetings and consultations, culminating in the deliberate process of defining the association’s identity, values, and governance framework.

“From the outset, we agreed that SLABOTH must be business-led, but nationally minded; collaborative, not confrontational; professional, transparent, and accountable in its governance; and constructive in its engagement with government regulators and development partners,” she said.

She further highlighted the association’s core objectives, which include advocating for fair, practical, and growth-oriented policies and regulations; serving as a structured platform for dialogue between the public and private sectors; promoting high standards, ethical conduct, and professionalism within the industry; and supporting capacity building and knowledge sharing. She disclosed that SLABOTH currently has a membership of 16 business owners.

Among the founding members of the association is Ms. Randa Swaid, owner of The Swiss Hotel in Freetown, while Mr. Abdul Kareem Jalloh, another industry stakeholder, serves as the Public Relations Officer.

Delivering a prepared speech on behalf of the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Ms. Nabeela Tunis, Mr. Leigh congratulated the membership on the formation of SLABOTH. He quoted the minister as saying that since assuming office, she has consistently pushed for a private sector–led tourism industry.

“I have done so not exclusively for what the ministry stands to benefit from such a sector, but with unity and the collective wellbeing of private actors in mind,” the speech noted.

Mr. Leigh added that this vision inspired the establishment of the National Tourism Council under the Tourism and Cultural Federation. He emphasized that the federation is not an extension of the ministry, but an inclusive platform designed to channel the concerns of industry actors from a practical and contextual perspective. He therefore welcomed SLABOTH as a timely and complementary initiative.

International partners also voiced their support. A representative of the European Union in Sierra Leone was among those who addressed the gathering, pledging continued support for SLABOTH as it works to strengthen the tourism and hospitality sector and promote sustainable economic development.

The launch of SLABOTH is widely regarded as a positive step toward consolidating private sector engagement, improving industry standards, and positioning tourism and hospitality as key drivers of Sierra Leone’s development agenda.

Ballanta Academy of Music Honours Malakai Bayoh
By Eagleville

The Ballanta Academy of Music and Performing Arts (BAMPA) on Thursday, 8 January 2026, honoured internationally acclaimed young vocalist Malakai Bayoh at a special ceremony held at the Ballanta Academy in Freetown.

The event attracted notable figures from the music and creative arts industry. It was graced by Double King, a voice tutor at the academy and music director; Pastor Jeremiah Sesay; other members of BAMPA; and celebrated Sierra Leonean artist Drizilik. The highlight of the occasion was Malakai’s moving performance of Ave Maria, which earned him warm applause and admiration from the audience.

Speaking at the ceremony, Magdalene Bayoh, Malakai’s mother, gave a detailed account of her son’s journey into music, describing it as one that began unexpectedly.

According to her, Malakai initially worked as a photographer and videographer for his elder sister, who was already performing at schools and public events. “She used to sing in schools and other gatherings, and Malakai would serve as her photographer and videographer. That was what he did until he gradually became interested in singing,” she explained.

She revealed that the first song Malakai learned was 7 Years by Lukas Graham. After noticing his natural ability, she encouraged him to join the church choir. His talent soon became evident when he performed his first solo at a BCC Christmas Special, where he stood out remarkably among other performers.

From that point, Malakai’s career began to grow rapidly. He started performing on various platforms locally and internationally and later appeared in a number of film and television productions, including projects associated with Netflix. He is also expected to feature in an upcoming animated movie, further showcasing his versatility as a young performer.

Magdalene disclosed that Malakai’s growing reputation attracted invitations from major international talent platforms, including America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent. “Both shows invited him to audition, but I chose Britain’s Got Talent. That decision proved right, as Malakai received the Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell, a moment that brought global recognition to his talent,” she said.

She emphasized that while she provided guidance and support, Malakai’s success is largely the result of his own passion, discipline, and determination. “He has genuine passion for singing and pursued it wholeheartedly. I tried my best to support him, but he truly did well for himself,” she added.

Magdalene also paid tribute to Dr. Julius Spencer, Chairman of BAMPA, noting that she herself is one of many Sierra Leoneans who have benefited from his mentorship in acting and theatre. “Dr. Spencer made this journey easier for my family. His mentorship brought us this far, both directly and indirectly. I am extremely proud of him, and my very first job in life came through him,” she said.

In his address, Dr. Julius Spencer congratulated Malakai on his achievements, describing him as a global superstar for his age. He advised the young singer to always combine talent with discipline and consistency. “Talent must go hand in hand with discipline and consistency, and I see those qualities in you, Malakai. Do not lose them. Sierra Leone is your country, and the world should know it. Keep making us proud and showing that talent truly pays,” Dr. Spencer said.

In his response, Malakai expressed heartfelt gratitude to BAMPA and the people of Sierra Leone for the honour accorded him. “I am very happy to be honoured in my homeland, and I am excited to be in Sierra Leone,” he said. He noted that he began singing at the age of seven, inspired by his sister, for whom he once worked as a photographer and videographer.

He also appreciated BAMPA for its efforts in nurturing talents in Sierra Leone.

Located at 27 Liverpool Street, Freetown, BAMPA has long been recognized as a hub for talent development, offering instruction in instruments such as piano, guitar, flute, violin, trumpet, and voice training. Over the years, it has trained many musicians who now serve as performers, teachers, and cultural ambassadors both at home and abroad. The academy has nurtured numerous students who have gone on to become celebrated musicians, including household names such as Drizilik and Rozay, among others.

On Friday, November 8, 2024, BAMPA received formal accreditation from the National Council for Technical, Vocational, and Other Academic Awards (NCTVA). This landmark achievement grants the academy the authority to award certificates that are nationally and internationally recognized in Sierra Leone, enhancing its standing as an institution dedicated to cultural and artistic development.

BAMPA’s academic offerings have traditionally focused on music, with students earning qualifications from esteemed UK bodies such as the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and the Music Teachers Board (MTB). However, the accreditation expands BAMPA’s scope, enabling it to introduce new courses in Dance, Theatre Arts, and Filmmaking.

Since its inception, BAMPA has been instrumental in cultivating local talent and preserving West African music and dance traditions.

Beyond academics, BAMPA contributes vibrantly to Sierra Leone’s arts scene through concerts, festivals, and competitions that draw diverse audiences and foster a deeper appreciation for the performing arts. As a hub of creativity and innovation, the academy blends indigenous and international music, empowering students with practical skills and preparing them for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the arts.

Through hands-on training and a strong commitment to artistic excellence, BAMPA remains a shining example of cultural preservation and creative expression in Sierra Leone.
