The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Njala University, Alhaji Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, has yesterday convened a high-level stakeholder meeting at the Deputy Vice-Chancellorโs Conference Room, Location, to deliberate on the progress and strategic plan of the Sustainable Aquaculture for Food Empowerment (SAFE) Project.
The meeting brought together senior university officials, project partners, donor representatives, and community leaders to strategize on scaling up Njala Universityโs fish farming initiative to additional regions across Sierra Leone.
In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal welcomed participants and underscored the strategic importance of the SAFE Project not only to Njala University but also to the nation. He stressed the projectโs potential to contribute significantly to the Governmentโs flagship School Feeding Programme by supplying sustainable and nutritious food sources. โIf we can put our hands together, then our dream of having a commercialized fish farm will come to pass,โ he said, while urging staff and community stakeholders to redouble their efforts to ensure long-term sustainability.
Dr. Matthew D. Kpundeh, the Projectโs Principal Investigator, expressed gratitude to donor partners for their continued support. He reaffirmed Njala Universityโs commitment to the projectโs success and highlighted its long-term impact on agriculture, food security, and empowerment for future generations.
Representing the local community, Chief Philip Momoh of Mokonde Town praised the universityโs vision and acknowledged donor contributions to rural development. In a symbolic gesture of support, he pledged portions of land for the projectโs expansion should the university require it.
Mr. Sheku Aruna Mannah, Deen of Students for Bo Campus, expressed willingness to support the initiative. He disclosed that he possesses land and financial resources to establish a fish farming pond but appealed for technical and mechanical assistance from the university and its donor partners.
Closing the session, Dr. Josephus Borsuah, Project Manager and donor representative, commended Njala University for its commitment and collaborative approach to project implementation. He emphasized the importance of sustained community engagement and encouraged broader outreach to maximize the projectโs national impact.
The SAFE Project continues to serve as a model for university-led development in Sierra Leone, aligning education, research, and community empowerment in the pursuit of sustainable food systems.
