Celebrating this year's Mother's Day, I had the honour of speaking to United Methodists at Floris United Methodist Church, Herndon, Virginia, USA, in commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the partnership between Helping Children Worldwide and the United Methodist Church in Sierra Leone.

In my message, I emphasised the tremendous impact the partnership has had over the last 25 years, providing homeless and street children with safe spaces where they too can experience God's love.

This initiative is one of the many legacies of the Late Bishop John K. Yambasu of blessed memory.

UPDATED WITH LETTER TO OUR CATHOLIC SIBLINGS. The Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church extends sincere condolences to the College of Cardinals and the entire Roman Catholic Church on the death of Pope Francis. COB President Bishop Tracy S. Malone had met the Pope at the Vatican last year in March.
Here is the letter from the COB to our Catholic brothers and sisters:

Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church
Letter to Catholics on the Death of Pope Francis

April 22, 2025
Dear Catholic Brothers and Sisters,
As United Methodists, we join with you in mourning the death of Pope Francis. We share in the assurance that Pope Francis has entered into eternal rest, having heard the words of our Lord Jesus, "Well done, my good and faithful servant, well done." (Matthew 25: 21)

We remember Pope Francis for his remarkable witness to the love and mercy of Christ. His deep spirituality, and commitment to peace, justice, and compassion has left a lasting legacy of holiness living. The theme of mercy was central to his life and ministry, particularly in his concern for those who have been excluded, marginalized, exploited, and oppressed.

We are inspired by his passion for caring for the earth. We celebrate his commitment to promoting ecumenism. Pope Francis welcomed leaders of different confessions and denominations, and his support for ecumenical work has fostered greater understanding and cooperation among Christians.

His leadership style, marked by a Christ-like sensitivity toward others and a willingness to address controversial issues, is a powerful example for us all. The process of synodality he promoted is an inspiration to Methodists, who have valued the importance of holy conferencing in our own tradition.

As we remember Pope Francis, we are challenged to follow his example of humble service for the good of others. In a world where authoritarian leaders and oligarchs seek to expand their power and influence, Pope Francis's commitment to serving the disempowered and the marginalized is a powerful reminder of our own calling as Christians.

May the life of Pope Francis inspire and guide us as we live our faith and bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May we continue to work together, as siblings in Christ, to promote peace, justice, and compassion in our world.

With sympathy and in God’s grace,

Bishop Tracy S. Malone

Today, I join my Ngors, Kortors, Peers and many Small Boys to celebrate our beloved Bo School at 119 and the most revered OBBA at 96 of their existence.

As the Apostle Paul writes: “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do” – Colossians 3:12-13.

We pray that these three brilliant words, MANNERS MAKETH MAN, will continue to preserve the honour of our great old school for ages to come.

God bless our Bo School

3641, Boye-Caulker James

Today I commissioned a modern Clinic at Harford School —constructed by the Harford Old Girls Association (HOGA), United States Chapter.

I expressed my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the association for their generous contribution and praised them for their commitment to uplifting their school and improving the welfare of its current pupils and staff.

As a way of giving back, I encouraged other alumnae to support their alma mater as I referenced the third stanza of their School Song: “For we learn that Jesus loves us, And we make the world so bright with our love, truth, and right — Look who is here."

Thank you, HOGA, United States Chapter!

In my capacity as Bishop of the United Methodist Church, Sierra Leone Episcopal Area, I was officially installed as Chancellor of the United Methodist University – Sierra Leone at the 2nd Congregational Convocation—a ceremony held at the Siaka Stevens Campus on King Harman Road, Freetown.

I also had the distinctive honour of conferring Degrees and Awarding Diplomas and Certificates to graduands who have been certified as worthy by the University.

In my address, I congratulated the graduates and stated that their parents also deserve congratulations from management, faculty and staff of the university.

I further paid a special tribute to the late Bishop John Kpahun Yambasu, whose vision in 2009, at the 129th Sessions of the Sierra Leone Annual Conference, delivered his maiden Episcopal address titled “Vision 2020”. That address, then, unveiled a 10-year strategic plan for the United Methodist in Sierra Leone, several projects proposed, with the United Methodist University as a special initiative. The late Bishop John Kpahun Yambasu’s initiative is alive today.

As Resident Bishop of the United Methodist Church in Sierra Leone and Chancellor of the United Methodist University, I assured my commitment to the growth and sustainability of the university. This commitment will be translated into resource provision with the following as my priorities: establishing an endowment fund, constructing a state-of-the-art learning facility, scholarship initiatives, research, partnership and exchange programs.

Growing and sustaining this university is critical to me as education is fundamental to my episcopal journey.

To God's glory, I joined my brother, Bishop Ande Emmanuel, at the joint annual conference sessions of the United Methodist Church in Nigeria to ordain 47 Elders and 11 Deacons to preach the word and serve all God’s people in that part of His vineyard.

I pray that they will continue to profess the Christian faith, and encouraging God’s people to carry each other’s burdens.

Thank you, Lord, for raising these faithful servants for your kingdom work.

At the 20th Commencement Convocation of the United Methodist University in Liberia, I was conferred Doctor of Divinity (Honoris Causa) for my lifelong devotion to the Church, demonstrated leadership, fostering positive change and uplifting communities through faith and service.

In my acceptance speech, with humility, I expressed deep gratitude to the University for this honour —and reaffirmed my commitment to continue championing education, faith, and humanitarian service. I encouraged young people in Liberia to prioritize education and uphold values of integrity, compassion, and selfless service to humanity so that the world would be a better place for all.

Thank you to the United Methodist University – Liberia

I am honoured to be invited to serve as guest preacher at the 20th Baccalaureate Service of the United Methodist University – Liberia.
Speaking to the 2025 graduands on the theme “Let Me See”, with text from Mark 10:46-52. I reminded them of blind Bartimaeus—an important character in the bible which depicts faithfulness, persistence and wisdom.

When it was decided that I would preach at their 20th Baccalaureate Service. I asked myself, okay, what do I hope for these graduates? What do I yearn for them as they leave this red brick oasis of higher learning and move into their future?” As I considered these questions, I was led to the story of Jesus healing the blind beggar Bartimaeus, because my hope for them, what I yearn for them, is the ability—but most of all—the desire—to see

I pray that they remember not only Bartimaeus’ desire to see, but the charge Jesus gave to him when his eyes were finally opened. A charge that Jesus gives every time a miracle like this occurs. And Jesus said, “Go! Go! Don’t stay here. Don’t keep this gift to yourself. Now that your eyes are opened, don’t go back to being blind. Move forward. Take this gift of vision out into the world. Take this gift and do something with it. Take this gift and go see it all”.

Congratulations and God bless you, class of 2025.
