Did you know that the metal ropes wrapped around Allieu Sesay’s wrists are the original restraints used on enslaved Africans in the 18th century? In the 1800s, a group of enslaved people known as the Maroons were deported from Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone. Upon their arrival, they built St. John’s Maroon Methodist Church, incorporating original wood from their ship to craft the pews, parts of the ceiling, and the beams. The ship’s original bell still hangs at the back of the church today.
