As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025, the urgency for gender equality has never been greater. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” underscores the harsh reality that, at the current rate of progress, full gender parity will not be achieved until 2158 a staggering five generations from now. In response, global leaders are being called upon to dismantle systemic barriers and push for decisive reforms that fast-track gender equality in every sector.
One figure who has long championed this cause is Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis a seasoned lawmaker, philanthropist and former Speaker 5th-Legistlature-ECOWAS Parliament, whose policy-driven approach, economic empowerment initiatives, and education advocacy have significantly advanced women’s rights across West Africa.
His Inspiration
Growing up in a family with multiple sisters, Dr. Tunis developed a deep commitment to protecting, supporting, and championing women’s rights from an early age. This sense of responsibility carried into his public life, where, long before assuming regional leadership roles, he and his wife personally invested millions of leones in microcredit schemes, helping women establish and expand businesses. Their commitment to education also saw them fund numerous scholarships for women and youth, ensuring access to higher learning for those facing financial hardships. Over the past decade, he has built a reputation as one of Sierra Leone’s most dedicated philanthropists, consistently supporting initiatives that uplift women and underserved communities.
His advocacy took on even greater significance when he entered regional and international politics. As Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament (2020–2024), he spearheaded key reforms to institutionalize gender parity, ensuring that gender equality moved beyond rhetoric to action. Under his leadership, the ECOWAS Parliament secured its first-ever dedicated budget for women’s empowerment. Through ECOFEPA, the female parliamentarians’ network, he pushed for independent funding, allowing it to operate freely and implement impactful programs across all 15 ECOWAS member states. This milestone expanded opportunities for leadership training, mentorship programs, and entrepreneurship initiatives, empowering thousands of women across the region.
A key architect of strengthening the 30% female representation law, he compelled national delegations to increase women’s participation in governance. His influence extended beyond regional politics, he strongly supported similar gender parity efforts in Sierra Leone, where, with the backing of President Julius Maada Bio, the country has emerged as a regional leader in gender inclusivity, setting new benchmarks for female political representation.
Beyond legislation, Dr. Tunis has worked extensively on economic and technological empowerment for women. Through ECOFEPA, he led efforts to provide laptops and digital resources to women and youth, improving their access to education and economic opportunities. His advocacy for women in STEM, politics, and leadership roles inspired a new generation of female leaders. His tenure also saw numerous young women from across West Africa visit the ECOWAS Parliament, gaining first-hand exposure to governance and leadership. Similar initiatives were replicated across multiple ECOWAS member states, fostering a growing culture of inclusion.
His steadfast advocacy also reshaped the ECOWAS Parliament itself, once dominated by male voices. The push for women’s representation culminated in his succession by a female Deputy Speaker, reinforcing his legacy as a champion of gender inclusion.
Accelerating Action in Sierra Leone
After his tenure at ECOWAS, Dr. Tunis returned to Sierra Leone with a renewed focus on grassroots empowerment. His Le10 billion scholarship fund, the largest privately funded education initiative in the country has provided critical financial support for young women pursuing university degrees.
His commitment to economic inclusion has led him to donate nearly a billion leones to women’s groups across multiple districts, ensuring that thousands of women gain financial independence. By expanding access to microfinance, vocational training, and business support, he has enabled women to transition from subsistence activities to sustainable entrepreneurship.
Through his Transform Pujehun District Agenda, he has prioritized agricultural development, digital literacy, and microfinance programs, recognizing them as critical sectors for long-term economic resilience. His fight for stronger laws against gender-based violence remains at the forefront of his advocacy, as he continues pushing for greater legal protections, enforcement mechanisms, and community-driven solutions.
A Champion for Gender Equality
Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis has never just spoken about gender equality he has fought for it, built policies around it, and ensured it moves from rhetoric to reality. His leadership in securing dedicated funding for female parliamentarians at ECOWAS earned him the Champion for Women’s Empowerment award from ECOFEPA in 2023. His unwavering commitment to gender-inclusive policies saw UN Women Nigeria name him a “He for She” advocate, while the Pan-African Parliament recognized his work in advancing female political participation and legislative reform.
But awards are not the goal impact is. From scholarships for young women to economic empowerment programs that have helped thousands gain financial independence, his efforts have transformed lives across Sierra Leone and West Africa. His legacy is not just in policies passed, but in doors opened, voices amplified, and barriers broken. And in his own words , “As long as there is work to be done, I will keep pushing forward because when women rise, nations rise”
A Call for Global Action
While progress has been made, the pace remains far too slow. The “Accelerate Action” campaign urges world leaders to move beyond gradual change and enact swift, transformative reforms that put women at the center of political, economic, and social development. It also emphasizes the need for greater investment in grassroots organizations, ensuring that those directly supporting women and girls receive the necessary funding and resources to sustain meaningful impact.
Dr. Tunis’s work serves as a model for effective leadership in gender equality. His efforts demonstrate that when policy, funding, and political will align, real progress is not only possible it is inevitable. As the world observes International Women’s Day 2025, his contributions stand as a testament to the power of advocacy, strategic investment, and unwavering commitment to advancing women’s rights.
The question now is whether other leaders will rise to the challenge, accelerate action, and ensure gender equality is achieved within our lifetime not left for the next generation.
