All is not lost! Isha Johansen : A Strong Woman in Football Administration

By Jida Kiz

‘All is not lost’ perfectly summarizes the current outlook of Madam Isha Johansen, who, despite losing the recent FIFA governance race, remains steadfast and positive about her future.

Football administrators are well accustomed to Johansen, who, unfortunately, had to fight a good battle against Kenizat Ibrahim, who won 30 votes against her.

In light of these challenges, her attitude towards serving football and her self-efficacy speaks for the indelible imprint she wishes to create.

In a special post election result interview with Waka Waka Bod Media, Johansen shared her story in football governance, “I have played my own role in football governance in CAF and FIFA, of which I am proud. The work I've done in football is significant, and while politics in this arena is undeniably complex, I believe my contributions have not gone unnoticed,” she said.

In regard to her commanding track record as a football executive, Johansen noted her love for the sport has not diminished. “The machinations of football politics are seldom straightforward. Nevertheless, what is important is that I still have it in me to serve football the way it deserves."

"And that to me is the most pertinent,” she expressed with determination.

In her endeavours as a pioneer for women in sports, she served as both the first female president of the Sierra Leone Football Association; and is a case example in the promotion of woman executives in sports management.

*Antonio Rudiger Foundation to Distribute Football Equipment in Kono and Freetown*

By Jida Kiz

The Antonio Rudiger Foundation, dedicated to promoting health, education, and sports development, is set to make a significant impact in Sierra Leone by distributing football equipment to community teams in Kono and Freetown. The foundation was established by Antonio Rudiger, the renowned Real Madrid defender with Sierra Leonean roots, as a means to give back to his homeland.

During a recent interview, Patrick Kamara, a cousin of Rudiger and the project lead, expressed the family's commitment to uplifting the lives of ordinary Sierra Leoneans. "Our focus is to change the lives of those who cannot afford basic necessities,” he stated. “We are starting with football equipment, which has cost us over $150,000. Since Rudiger is a footballer, it makes sense to support community teams that lack access to quality training gear.”

The equipment donation includes first-class soccer boots, team jerseys, windbreakers, shin guards, training sneakers for coaches, and much more. This initiative aims to ensure that young athletes in Sierra Leone have the proper tools to develop their skills and pursue their passion for football.

The distribution event kicks off on Saturday, December 28, featuring an exhibition match with single-leg hampities, where participating teams will receive backpacks filled with jerseys and other training equipment. This event promises to foster a sense of community and excitement among local football enthusiasts.

Following the initial event in Freetown, the program will expand to Kono, with additional exhibitions scheduled to take place in the mountainous area of Regent. The exhibition match and distribution of training equipment in Regent will occur on January 9, while the date for the Kono event is still pending.

With this initiative, the Antonio Rudiger Foundation aims not only to enhance sports opportunities in Sierra Leone but also to inspire a new g

The 46th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) came to a productive end with a three-hour extensive congress chaired by President Patrice Motsepe The five-day eventful congress, held in the bustling city of Addis Ababa, saw the adoption of significant resolutions and the highlighting of crucial proposals to improve the state of African football.

One of the highlights of the congress was the change of the age limit for serving in CAF.

The legal committee of CAF proposed that the age limit be increased from 70 years to any age as long as the individual is capable of serving. In a majority vote, 52 members voted in favor, and only two voted against.

The adoption of this resolution shows the progressive mindset and openness of CAF towards promoting diversity and inclusivity within its ranks.

Moreover, President Motsepe also proposed an increase in the annual allocation from $250,000 to $400,000. This will enable CAF to invest more in the development of football in Africa. Additionally, the zonal unions have also seen a significant increase of 50% in their allocations. This move will undoubtedly create a positive impact on the regional football associations and foster a more collaborative environment for the growth of the sport.

The congress also approved the increase in the prize money for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to $56 million. This increase in prize money will not only elevate the status of the tournament but also provide a more substantial incentive for teams to perform at their best. President Motsepe acknowledged the financial stability of CAF, citing a reduction in deficit from $28.9 million to $9.2 million within the fiscal year.

This shows the efficient management and strategic planning of CAF under the leadership of President Motsepe.

Furthermore, amidst all the adoption and resolutions, the commitment of President Motsepe to improve and promote football across Africa was evident in the setup and street branding of the congress.

The vibrant and colorful branding of the city of Addis Ababa showcased the passion and dedication of the CAF President towards elevating the status of football in Africa.
In conclusion, the 46th Ordinary General Assembly of CAF was a resounding success, thanks to the leadership of President Patrice Motsepe.

With the adoption of crucial resolutions and the highlighting of progressive proposals, CAF is set to witness significant developments and growth in the coming years. The future of African football looks bright, and it is all thanks to the inspiring leadership of President Motsepe.
