President Dallin H.Oaks was announced today as the 18th President and Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The announcement was made during a live broadcast from Salt Lake City, Utah. President Oaks was sustained and set apart today, October 14, 2025.

In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the prophet is chosen through a divinely inspired process. When the prophet passes away, the First Presidency is dissolved, and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, led by the longest-serving Apostle, assumes leadership, confirming the new Prophet through revelation and priesthood authority.

President Oaks, 93, succeeds President Russell M. Nelson, who passed away September 27, 2025.

The new leader of a global faith of more than 17 million members has called President Henry B. Eyring, 92, and President D. Todd Christofferson, 80 to serve with him as first and second counselors in the First Presidency, the Church’s highest governing body.

President Oaks also announced that President Jeffrey R. Holland, 84, will be the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

President Russell M. Nelson passed away on Saturday, September 27, at the age of 101. Following his death, the First Presidency was dissolved, and its counselors resumed their roles in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

According to tradition, a new First Presidency will not be organized or announced until after President Nelson’s funeral, which is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, at noon.

During the Saturday morning session of the Church’s 195th Annual General Conference on April 5, President Dallin H. Oaks, who was then First Counselor in the First Presidency, announced the calls of 16 new General Authority Seventies, adjustments in the Presidency of the Seventy, and a new Young Men General Presidency.

The new Young Men leaders began their service on August 1, coinciding with the implementation of the changes in the Presidency of the Seventy. President Timothy L. Farnes was sustained during the April 2025 general conference as the new Young Men General President, with Brothers David J. Wunderli and Sean R. Dixon as his counselors.

Former Utah Supreme Court Justice, University of Chicago law professor, and president of Brigham Young University, Dallin H. Oaks, is expected to become the next president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following the death of Russell M. Nelson. He built a distinguished career in law, academia, and public service before being called as an apostle in 1984. His decades of leadership have prepared him to guide the global Church at a pivotal moment in its history. The Lord’s pattern is clear: He raises up leaders of faith, wisdom, and courage to guide His Church in times of great need. These are men who have already proven themselves in the world but choose to consecrate all to Christ.

Looking back at the succession of prophets, we can see how the Lord truly calls men who are prepared both spiritually and professionally for the unique challenges of our time.

President Gordon B. Hinckley (1995–2008) was a master communicator. In a time when the Church needed to expand its voice to a global audience, he oversaw a dramatic increase in temples worldwide and used media to share the gospel like never before. His skills in communication were exactly what the world and the Church needed.

President Thomas S. Monson (2008–2018) was a veteran and a man of compassion. At a time when the world was facing wars, displacement, and humanitarian crises, he taught service, kindness, and ministering to the one, reminding us that charity and love heal the wounds of conflict.

President Russell M. Nelson (2018–2025) was a world-renowned heart surgeon. At a time when the world would endure the COVID-19 pandemic and rising health crises, the Lord raised up a prophet who understood life, healing, and the power of both physical and spiritual wellness. He even lived a hundred and 1 before he died!

President Dallin H. Oaks, next in line of succession, is a distinguished judge. In a world filled with political divisions, moral debates, and questions of justice, the Lord has prepared a leader who is skilled in discernment, fairness, and standing firmly for truth.

The pattern is clear: God is at the helm of His Church. He prepares and calls prophets who can meet the world’s challenges—not by chance, but by divine design.

"We are to live in the world but not be of the world. We must live in the world because, as Jesus taught in a parable, His kingdom is “like leaven,” whose function is to raise the whole mass by its influence (see Luke 13:21; Matthew 13:33; see also 1 Corinthians 5:6–8). His followers cannot do that if they associate only with those who share their beliefs and practices."
