Colleagues, I'm delighted to humbly reach out to you to express my intention to aspire for the position of President of our noble association, SLAJ, in the June 7 elections. As you are all aware,

I am a media, public relations, and communications specialist with 30 years of journalistic experience, including at least 20 years in various editorial positions. Academic Qualifications: I hold a Master of Arts (MA) in Mass Communication, Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), Bachelor of Laws with Honours (LLB Hons), Higher Teachers Certificate (HTC), and several in-service professional certificates. Editorial Experience: I served as Editor, SierraEye Magazine, and NewsWatch Magazine; Editor, NewsWatch, AYV, and Standard Times Newspapers; and Head of Editorial, AYV Media Empire. Current Media Engagement: I am providing editorial support services to several media institutions at present. SLAJ Executive Experiences: I served as National Secretary-General and Assistant Secretary General. During my respective tenures, I championed the cause for the institutionalization and decentralization of SLAJ, including securing the current SLAJ Headquarters and Secretariat at Campbell Street in Freetown, and the establishment of the three regional offices in Bo, Kenema, and Makeni. Media Regulation Experience: I served as a Board Member at the Independent Media Commission (IMC). Other Achievements in Media Ecosystem: I am one of the Founding Fathers of Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL), the Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU), and a pioneer of the revival of the Sierra Leone Sports Writers Association (SWASAL) and the merging of the former UN Radio into the SLBS to establish the SLBC. They endorsed my candidacy as borne out of a legacy of selfless service and commitment to our noble association, being a champion of press freedom, beacon of professionalism, and media development practitioner. I'm going into this race fresh from the Independent Media Commission (IMC), where I served on the Board for six years as ‘SLAJ Representative’ and ‘Print Media Expert’ with diligence and professionalism. As a former SLAJ National Secretary-General, I’m passionate about serving you as President, based on the vast knowledge, hands-on skills and experiences that I have acquired over the years. I hope to build on the achievements of past and outgoing regimes, address the challenges, and combat the threats to our independence, integrity, press freedom, and freedom of expression. I seek to work with you, our affiliates, the Independent Media Commission, media interest groups, the Government, and development partners to redefine a new era of hope and prosperity for SLAJ, firmly anchored on the principles of ‘Solidarity, Transparency, Accountability, Responsiveness and Trustworthiness’ - A fresh START! Once confirmed as a candidate by the SLAJ Electoral Commission after being nominated by the BBC Correspondent and former SLAJ President, Umaru Fofana, and witnessed by Abdulai Gbla of Liberty TV and Gbla TV, I will come back to seek your endorsement, support, and vote! Warm regards,

Mustapha M. Sesay

*SAVE THE SOUL OF SLAJ:* Vote Mustapha MK Sesay for Desired Change– Integrity & Dignity of Journalists

By Elkass Sannoh

Over Sixteen (16) years ago, I started earning one hundred thousand Old Leones (Le.100,000) as a Cub Reporter. As a dedicated Reporter, I crossed the Rubicon amidst difficult challenges-grinding criticisms and rugged roads to shape my professional career path and to make SLAJ an enviable Association in the country. Indeed, we stood the test of time, and today, we are being celebrated.

As the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) prepares for its highly anticipated elections on June 13-14, the stakes have never been higher. The future of Sierra Leone’s most respected media body hangs in the balance, and the question every journalist must ask is simple: *Who truly has the heart, history, and hands to lead SLAJ into a new era of excellence, integrity and progress?*

*The Answer is: Mustapha M.K. Sesay.*

For over 30 unbroken years, Mustapha M.K. Sesay has served SLAJ with unmatched dedication under the stewardship of media icons like BBC’s Umaru Fofana. His loyalty to the profession and commitment to press freedom are legendary. He has walked every mile with SLAJ — from its quiet victories to its defining battles. And now, he steps forward again — not for self, but for the soul of the Association.

He may have lost in the past, but true leaders don’t quit. They rise. They learn. They return stronger — with purpose.

I'm not a friend of Mustapha Sesay, but I'm joining his campaign to SAVE SLAJ. The campaign team of his opponent has no message apart from insults and smear propaganda. We should not allow an inexperienced driver to take an Association we suffered and sacrificed to build in the wrong direction! With Mustapha in the driving seat, SLAJ is in the right trajectory and in a safe pair of hands.
I have supported SLAJ in so many ways, including buying a brand new projector, cabinet files, and materials for PowerPoint presentations, among other items. I did so to SAVE THE SOUL OF SLAJ. Now is the time to join me SAVE THE SOUL OF SLAJ.

Please be decisive. Take the right action to vote for the Presidential Candidate of Choice - Mustapha M.K. Sesay! Now is the time to do justice to your conscience.
Because when the noise fades, what remains is the truth — and MK Sesay has always stood on the side of truth.

To those who still undecided: know that Mustapha's campaign is not built on insults or fear. It is built on a vision of Solidarity, Transparency, Accountability, Responsiveness, and Trustworthiness - a fresh START! He brings not just promises but concrete plans to secure the welfare of journalists, strengthen professional standards, and defend press freedom without compromise.

While others may use intimidation and smear tactics, Mustapha offers what SLAJ urgently needs: Decades of hands-on experience, a proven track record, and an unshakeable belief in the power of the press.

To our rising stars in journalism — the young, the bold, the digital natives - This is your moment. Join a movement rooted in wisdom but driven by your energy. Let your votes shape a future where your voice is protected and your work is respected.

This election is bigger than individuals. It's about Saving the Soul of SLAJ.

Vote Mustapha M.K. Sesay.

*GRAMMATICAL REVIEW OF THE 'ACTION' MANIFESTO* *(I - Innovation)*

By Umaru Kanu

No doubt, it is time to return the grammatically flawed *ACTION Manifesto* of the SLAJ Secretary General and 2025 Presidential candidate, *Alhaji Manika Kamara,* to the drafters! Or better still contract new editors. Here's why:

‘As artificial intelligence reshapes how media content is produced, published, and trusted, *we will equip ensure journalists are equipped to respond, with skill, ethics, and resilience'.* Lol!

*...with Limkokwing, with BBC Media Action.* Lol!

*... HThrough partnerships...* Lol!

The *Manika CampaignTeam* is referred to Matthew 7:3-5 and Peter Tosh's *Glass House.* (😜😄🤓)

Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) is standing at a pivotal moment in its history, as growing calls for transformational leadership take center stage. Leading that charge is Mustapha MK Sesay—a respected journalist, media activist, and mentor—who has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency of SLAJ.

With a career defined by integrity, strong advocacy, and a commitment to journalistic ethics, Sesay is positioning himself as the face of renewal for the association. His campaign is built on the pillars of inclusivity, unity, and professional development—anchored by a promise to restore SLAJ’s credibility and reconnect it with its core values.

> “SLAJ needs a new kind of leadership—one that listens, acts, and inspires,” Sesay said during a recent stakeholder engagement. “I am ready to lead a movement that will elevate journalism in Sierra Leone and ensure every member, regardless of their location or status, feels heard and valued.”

A Vision for Renewal

Sesay’s campaign outlines a practical and principle-driven vision that includes:

Championing bold advocacy for improved safety, compensation, and protections for journalists nationwide.

Confronting pressing industry challenges, including the shrinking space for press freedom and the lack of institutional support for local media houses.

Re-engaging veteran members who have become disillusioned with the association’s direction and rebuilding SLAJ’s internal unity.

Investing in young journalists through structured training, mentorship, and opportunities for career growth in both traditional and digital media spaces.

Promoting transparency and good governance within SLAJ’s leadership structures, pledging a clean, accountable administration free of past administrative controversies.

Restoring Trust in Leadership

For many members, Sesay’s candidacy represents more than just a leadership bid—it symbolizes a chance to reclaim SLAJ’s credibility and purpose. Nicknamed by some as “the media redeemer,” he is seen as someone with both the moral standing and the institutional knowledge to unite the association at a time of increasing fragmentation.

> “This campaign isn’t about power—it’s about principle,” Sesay emphasized. “Journalists deserve a leader who will fight for them, serve with humility, and lead with integrity. The time for that change is not tomorrow. It is now.”

As SLAJ prepares for its highly anticipated election, the eyes of the media community are now firmly on Mustapha MK Sesay—whose message of restoration, empowerment, and action is quickly gaining traction across the country.
