Guinea's military has confirmed the detention of 16 Sierra Leonean soldiers, accusing them of crossing into Guinean territory, setting up a tent, and raising their national flag. Guinean authorities say they also seized the soldiers' equipment and supplies during the operation. Sierra Leone, however, says its personnel were on their own side of the border constructing a border post when Guinean forces apprehended several members of its security team, including an officer. The two countries have been locked in a decades‑long border dispute. Tensions reignited last year when Guinean forces entered a mineral‑rich border town in Sierra Leone. 🇸🇱 🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

OUTRAGE AT THE BORDER: HOW DID SIERRA LEONE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN?

Freetown / Conakry — February 2026

A reported border confrontation between Sierra Leonean and Guinean forces in the early hours of February 23, 2026, has triggered sharp public criticism and renewed scrutiny of security coordination along the two shared frontier.

According to Bilal Mansaray, a journalist with Radio Shalom in Koinadugu District, the incident occurred in Kaliyereh Village, Sulima Chiefdom, Falaba District — a remote area near the Sierra Leone–Guinea boundary. The confrontation allegedly resulted in the detention of a Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) captain and other personnel, who were reportedly taken into custody in Conakry.

Local sources cited by the reporter claim that thirteen Sierra Leonean security personnel — including two officers from the Operational Support Division (OSD) and eleven military personnel — were apprehended following a dispute over the positioning of a military checkpoint.

Disputed Territory

The reported dispute began when Sierra Leonean forces mounted a checkpoint in Kaliyereh Village. Guinean forces objected, asserting that the area falls within Guinean territory. They reportedly requested GPS coordinates to verify Sierra Leone’s claim to the land, stating that a checkpoint would only be permissible upon proof of territorial jurisdiction.

According to the account, Sierra Leonean forces proceeded with the checkpoint installation despite the objection. Guinean forces then detained the personnel and transported them to Conakry.

As of publication, official statements from authorities in Freetown and Conakry remain limited, and independent verification of the full sequence of events is ongoing.

A History of Ambiguity

The Sierra Leone–Guinea border, stretching more than 650 kilometers, originates from colonial-era demarcations negotiated between Britain and France in the late 19th century. While much of the boundary has been form
