This is the issue.

Today is Zero Tolerance Day for FGM and as always in Sierra Leone, the conversation is anything but simple.

On one hand, we are faced with the hard truth: when non-medical bodily harm is inflicted on a child who cannot consent, it stops being a “rite of passage” and becomes violation. FGM is recognised globally as such, with millions of girls affected worldwide.

On the other hand, there is also a strong argument: should we be expending limited resources fighting over FGM, or should we focus on education and poverty reduction, knowing that education and economic empowerment often change how individuals and families make decisions about practices like FGM?

This is just one of the many tensions at the heart of the FGM debate in Sierra Leone. Human rights protection vs development priorities. Legal abolition vs cultural extinction.

What I know is this: the conversation only moves when we sit with the discomfort and ask harder questions. What actually leads to lasting change? What can help protect the lives of all girls in Sierra Leone now, and what ensures they’re protected forever?

What do you think?

I’ve always loved history ...specifically the stories around the whys and the hows.

I grew up during the war but I was too young to understand what was happening at the time. Like many in my generation, I inherited fragments of memory. What I did have, though, was curiosity: about how and why Sierra Leone is the way it is today.

That curiosity is part of the foundation of my podcast. And it’s why I created a three-part episode to mark our first National Remembrance Day.

The episode brings together historians, media practitioners, civic voices, survivors, and everyday Sierra Leoneans to explore what remembrance really means, why honest reflection matters, and how peace is something we have to actively protect.

As our Remembrance week comes to a close, I’m sharing this as an invitation to pause, to listen, and to engage more honestly with our history; out of care for the future and for the land that we love. 🇸🇱

Not sure whether I make a great interviewee 😆 but I had a candid conversation with Euphemia, my former schoolmate, on Effie’s Cozy Corner. We talked about the mindset, discipline and pivotal moments that have shaped my journey so far.

Check it out, I’ll put the link in the comments 🩷
