Government Announces February Closed Season for Artisanal Fishing
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has declared a closed fishing season for the artisanal fisheries subsector, effective 1st to 28th February 2026, as part of efforts to conserve fish stocks and promote sustainable marine resource management. The announcement, made in a public notice issued in Freetown on January 7, 2026, states that the closure will serve as a biological resting period to allow fish populations to reproduce and rebuild. From 12 midnight on January 31, 2026, all artisanal fishing canoes are expected to anchor at their respective landing sites.
The Ministry warned that the closure will be strictly enforced, with sanctions including confiscation of fish, fishing gear, outboard engines, and heavy fines for violators. Enforcement will be carried out in collaboration with the Joint Maritime Committee, including security agencies and community stakeholders. While acknowledging the temporary hardship the measure may cause to fishing communities, the Government assured the public that arrangements have been made to ensure a continuous fish supply to markets, stressing that the intervention is aimed at securing long-term sustainability and stronger coastal livelihoods.

Parliament Warns Accord Logistics CEO Over Alleged Contempt

FREETOWN — The Parliament of Sierra Leone on Tuesday cautioned the Chief Executive Officer of Accord Logistics, Johnny Kouza, following allegations of contempt arising from his conduct toward the Parliamentary Committee on Trade and Industry.
Kouza appeared at the Bar of Parliament after the Committee’s Chairperson, Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay, formally complained that he had shown disrespect to the Committee and failed to adhere to its directives.
Addressing him, the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, warned that failure to comply with the summons of any Standing Committee constitutes contempt of Parliament. He stressed that Parliament would exercise its constitutional authority to enforce compliance where necessary.
The Speaker described Kouza’s conduct as unacceptable and cautioned that any recurrence could attract severe sanctions, including detention, in line with parliamentary procedure.

“This is the first and last time such behaviour will be tolerated,” the Speaker said, warning that future acts of contempt would not be treated leniently.
Reacting to the development, Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, commended the Speaker’s action, describing it as a strong signal that Parliament’s authority must be respected. He urged similar measures against officials of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies who disregard parliamentary summons.
The incident underscores Parliament’s oversight role and highlights the expectations for cooperation and accountability from both public institutions and private-sector entities that engage with the legislature.

The administration of Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone, has acknowledged allegations of misconduct made by Edwina Jamiru, a Diploma II student in the Legal Studies Programme, against Hon. Justice Momoh Jah Stevens, an Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Law.

In a press statement dated 10th November 2025, the Deputy Registrar, Brima Bah, affirmed the university’s zero-tolerance policy towards harassment, abuse, or misconduct by staff or students. He assured that the matter is under thorough investigation by the College Discipline Committee and that appropriate action will follow based on the findings.

The statement further noted that Ms. Jamiru had been engaged by the administration and referred to relevant college support services, including counseling. However, the university cautioned her against making public comments or social media posts deemed contemptuous or damaging to the institution’s reputation.

Meanwhile, the contract of the lecturer in question is under review pending the outcome of the investigation.

FBC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment, urging all students to report any form of misconduct and to use available support channels to ensure their well-being.

Sierra Leone’s Gender Ministry Warns Against Sharing Content of Abuse Survivors Online

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs (MoGCA) has issued a public notice urging citizens to act responsibly when handling content involving women and child survivors of abuse.

The Ministry expressed concern over the growing trend of sharing photos and videos of survivors on social media, noting that such actions—though often well-intentioned—can cause severe emotional harm, stigma, and re-victimization.

Citing the Child Rights Act 2025, the Ministry emphasized three key principles: prioritizing the best interests of the child, preserving the dignity and privacy of survivors, and ensuring their safety and confidentiality.

Citizens were reminded to report, not broadcast incidents of abuse, to protect survivors’ identities, and to avoid sharing or commenting on posts that reveal personal details. The Ministry encouraged reporting through official channels such as the Family Support Unit (FSU), Rainbo Initiative, or by calling the 116 Hotline.

The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending gender-based violence and promoting a culture of protection and respect for all survivors.

Sierra Leone’s Gender Minister Participates in Reykjavik Global Forum of Women Leaders

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Hon. Dr. Isata Mahoi, participated in the Reykjavik Global Forum of Women Leaders in Iceland, which brought together over 500 global leaders under the theme “Power, Together for Change!” The Forum focused on issues such as equal pay, representation, parental leave, and the fight against gender-based violence.

Dr. Mahoi joined a high-level panel alongside the former President of Lithuania and the former Prime Minister of Finland, where she shared Sierra Leone’s journey in strengthening democracy and advancing women’s leadership. Reflecting on the 1991–2002 civil war, she underscored women’s crucial roles in peacebuilding and community mobilization despite suffering greatly during the conflict.

The Minister noted that women still face intimidation, displacement, and limited post-election support during elections. However, she highlighted the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act (2024) as a major milestone, helping women secure 34.5% of parliamentary seats, surpassing the 30% benchmark. The number of female councillors and speakers has also grown significantly.

Dr. Mahoi emphasized the formation of the Network of Women Ministers and Parliamentarians (2023), which fosters solidarity across political divides despite limited resources. She reaffirmed her Ministry’s commitment to championing women’s and children’s rights, including through initiatives like the Real Man Campaign, which engages traditional and community leaders to combat gender-based violence.

She also announced the development of an Accountability Framework to enhance institutional gender integration and monitoring, and regional collaboration through the Mano River Union to strengthen cross-border advocacy for women’s rights.

Citing the recent passage of the Child Rights Act (2025) and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (2024), Dr. Mahoi noted new mechanisms for digital reporting to support survivors. As Sierra Leone’s national champion of the One Billion Rising Campaign, she continues to promote women’s dignity and inclusion.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Mahoi called for stronger global policy implementation, stressing that economic empowerment is key for women to challenge inequality and fully participate in governance and leadership.
