Today, Monday, 10 August 2026, residents of IDA, Kenema, have raised serious concerns over the burning of tyres and other waste materials in the community.

According to reports, some residents are allegedly burning tyres and other waste materials, which produces thick smoke that affects the environment and business people.

PRESIDENT BIO URGES PARLIAMENT TO VOTE YES FOR CONSTITUTIONAL REFORMS.

President Julius Maada Bio has made a strong appeal to Parliament to pass the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill, 2025, describing it as a historic opportunity to strengthen democracy, inclusion and good governance. In a national address on Sunday, 9th August 2026, the President said the proposed reforms are the result of decades of consultations spanning successive administrations, following recommendations from constitutional review processes and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

President Bio highlighted key provisions of the Bill, including proportional representation, a constitutional minimum 30 per cent quota for women in political nominations, and measures aimed at strengthening the independence and accountability of electoral institutions. He argued that the reforms are necessary ahead of the next general elections, warning that delaying constitutional and electoral changes could create uncertainty and confusion. The President also emphasised that the Constitution belongs to all Sierra Leoneans and should not serve the interests of any political party or government.

The President called on Members of Parliament to rise above partisan considerations and vote in the national interest. He urged lawmakers to vote “Yes” for inclusion, women, young people, credible elections and a stronger democracy, stressing that future generations would remember their decisions. President Bio concluded by appealing for the Bill to be passed, describing the moment as an opportunity for Parliament to choose “country over division” and complete a constitutional reform process that has continued for more than two decades.
