Sierra Leone Chief Minister Moinina David Sengeh Exclusive Meeting with the CEO of TikTok Mr Shou about monetisation. This is huge and worth trending 👇

‘’The Chief's Diary: Social Media Monetization and Impact Creation

I had an amazing conversation with the CEO of Tiktok, Mr Shou Zi Chew, today.
Sierra Leone has 1.5 active monthly users (~17% of the population) of tiktok (accounting for about 30% of internet traffic). Shou and I spoke about ways in which businesses can reach new customers, good teachers can reach more students, activists can mobilize to clean rivers and beaches or protect the environment, and most importantly, how we can support the creative sector. He accepted my invitation to visit Sierra Leone at an appropriate time (hopefully, once we solve user monetization). For me, when President Bio flagged this as an issue, I understood his vision and commitment to young people. That's why we have continued to expand internet access, make available cheaper smart phones, and put in the regulatory and fiscal frameworks for our transformational development.

The visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the alluvial diamond mining site in Hangha, Kenema district, on December 1, 1961, is a moment that reflects the complex history of Africa's relationship with colonial powers. While it is a historical event, it also serves as a reminder of the exploitation of Africa's vast resources by external forces for centuries. The diamonds beneath African soil, like many other resources, have fueled global wealth while often leaving the people of the continent impoverished.

As we reflect on this moment, we must reaffirm our commitment to Pan-Africanism—the belief in the unity, self-determination, and collective prosperity of African people. The wealth of Africa, from its diamonds to its gold, from its fertile lands to its vibrant cultures, belongs to Africans. It is our duty to ensure that these resources are harnessed for the development of our nations and the empowerment of our people.

The late Queen's visit symbolizes a time when Africa's destiny was not in its own hands. Today, we stand proud as a continent reclaiming its narrative, striving for economic independence, and fostering unity among our diverse nations. Let us continue to build a future where Africa's resources benefit Africans first, where our leaders prioritize the needs of our people, and where the legacy of colonialism is replaced by a legacy of resilience, innovation, and self-sufficiency.

Africa is not just a land of resources; it is a land of people with dreams, potential, and the power to shape their own future. Forward ever, backward never! ✊🏾🌍

Movie Review: PENANCE

Synopsis:
Penance is a gripping drama that delves deep into the emotional and psychological effects of abuse, as well as the challenges victims face when seeking justice. The film follows the journey of a woman who takes extreme measures to avenge her friend’s tragic death. After suffering abuse and being overwhelmed by shame, the friend ultimately takes her own life. The story unveils a harsh reality: a slow, corrupt justice system that often fails to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.

Plot and Themes:
The protagonist's decision to seek justice on her own terms is a bold and unsettling move, reflecting the frustration and desperation victims or their loved ones feel when the system turns a blind eye. Her drastic actions raise moral questions, making the audience ponder: What lengths would you go to when justice feels unattainable?

The film does not shy away from showing the cracks in the justice system—its inefficiencies, corruption, and lack of empathy for victims. It paints a stark picture of how societies often fail to protect their most vulnerable, leaving many feeling powerless and alone. The main character’s extreme choices serve as both a commentary on systemic failure and a raw depiction of the human need for closure and justice.

Why It Works:
Penance succeeds in balancing a powerful emotional narrative with thought-provoking social commentary. The story grips the audience, forcing them to confront uncomfortable truths about justice and the lengths one might go to right a wrong. The film is not just a tale of revenge—it’s a call to reflect on the inefficiencies of the systems we rely on and the impact they have on real lives.

Final Thoughts:
Penance is an eye-opening and heart-wrenching film that lingers long after the credits roll. It challenges viewers to question the state of our justice system and empathize with the difficult choices people are forced to make when the law fails them. While the protagonist’s actions may seem extreme, they’re a powerful reminder of the frustration and pain that arise when justice seems out of reach.

If you’re looking for a thought-provoking and emotionally charged film, Penance is a must-watch. It’s not just entertainment—it’s a conversation starter about justice, accountability, and the human cost of systemic failure.

My Rating: ★★★★☆

The National Public Health Agency (NPHA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and its partners, held a press briefing on the Mpox outbreak in Sierra Leone on January 13, 2025, at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on Wilkinson Road, Freetown. The event brought together representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Africa CDC, US CDC, bloggers, journalists, and Civil Society Organizations. The briefing provided updates on the outbreak and outlined strategies to control and prevent further spread of the disease.

Executive Director Brig. Prof. Foday Sahr updated attendees on the Mpox situation, confirming two laboratory-confirmed cases. On August 13, 2024, the WHO Director-General had declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The first confirmed case in Sierra Leone was a trader who tested positive on January 10, 2025, with symptoms beginning on January 6. The second case involved a 21-year-old male residing on Sheriff Drive, Lumley, who also developed symptoms on January 6, 2025.

The NPHA has implemented several response measures, including case management, contact tracing, enhanced surveillance, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with local and international partners. The agency urges the public to report symptoms, avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, and maintain good hygiene practices. The NPHA and MoH, leveraging lessons from previous outbreaks like Ebola and COVID-19, are committed to protecting public health and ensuring safety for all Sierra Leoneans.

Miss Rachael Kuyembeh, NPHA Public Relations Coordinator, expressed gratitude to healthcare workers, partners, and stakeholders for their dedication. She encouraged the public to stay informed, follow health guidelines, and work together to safeguard national well-being.

Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby declared:
“Distinguished Members of the Press, Partners, and Citizens of Sierra Leone, the confirmation of two Mpox cases has necessitated immediate action. Under the Public Health Act, and in consultation with His Excellency the President, Rtd. Brigadier Dr. Julius Maada Bio, I am officially declaring a public health emergency.”

He emphasized that this declaration underscores the government’s commitment to mobilizing resources, containing the disease, and providing quality care. Enhanced surveillance systems are already detecting, tracking, and isolating suspected cases. He advised the public to call 117 a free toll number if they have or see anyone showing symptoms of MPox or go up the nearest health facility.

President Bio has fully endorsed the emergency declaration, urging national unity and adherence to health guidelines. Dr. Demby highlighted that Sierra Leone’s experiences managing past outbreaks have strengthened its public health response, ensuring readiness to address this emerging threat.

This coordinated approach reflects Sierra Leone’s determination to effectively manage and contain the Mpox outbreak with the support of its partners.
