We're officially tweens. 🎉🎉🎉
Over the past 10 years, journalism has been through some tough times. Those continue of course. But we've also seen thousands — literally thousands — of journalists pivot toward approaches that nurture their communities. We're thinking of solutions journalism (of course). But we're also thinking of meaningful engagement, essential service journalism, reporting that embraces complexity, and even turning over the reigns of reporting to the community.
It can feel like a drop in the bucket. There's so much work left to do! And yet we've seen the potential and the results of journalists working, thinking, imagining differently. Many journalists are thrilled to find healthier ways of reporting. They're able to work for their (and their community's) better angels.
It took a few tries to really get Solutions Journalism Network off the ground. We made it official in 2013. Across those 10 years, we've stayed energized even in the darkest times by the work of journalists and outlets — across issues, from local to global, from Alaska to Zimbabwe. We might have introduced them to an idea they'd not heard of, but they show us what's possible. They remind us daily that long after SJN is gone, the work of covering *success* (and constructive failure!) to help communities succeed themselves will flourish. That's the point of it all.
Now that we've officially hit double digits, we'll occasionally celebrate throughout the year. But we're not just celebrating SJN. We want to celebrate the energies that power solutions journalism: the people, the ideas, the heart, the creativity, the compassion, the connection. If you've got a memory of solutions journalism (with us, yes, but any is great) or just an idea to share, tag us or use . And remember that reaching a healthier tomorrow means going beyond the problem. We'll meet you there.
