BREAKING NEWS: Djibouti/Somaliland: Isaaq Members of Djibouti’s Republican Guard Under Scrutiny by the Clan-Mafia Regime (Reer-Cawl/Mamasan)

Since 26 December 2025, following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, the clan-mafia regime (Reer-Cawl/Mamasan) has begun targeting Djiboutian citizens of Isaaq ethnicity who seek to support Hargeisa’s diplomatic advance on the international stage.
The debate over Somaliland’s recognition has reached Djibouti’s Republican Guard, leading to a split within this unit responsible for the security of the Djiboutian presidency. Officers and non-commissioned officers of Isaaq origin within the Republican Guard have defended the recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state, while officers and NCOs who are close relatives of Ismaïl Omar Guelleh (Reer-Cawl/Mamasan) have openly opposed Israel’s recognition. Tensions have emerged within the Republican Guard barracks, thereby compromising the security of the Haramous presidential couple.
On Sunday, 4 January 2026, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh ordered a three-day general alert for the Republican Guard. The clan-mafia regime (Reer-Cawl/Mamasan) convened an emergency meeting at the residence of Djama Ali Guelleh. The first decision taken was the establishment of a red list under the designation “Hargeisa 2.” This list includes several Isaaq officers and non-commissioned officers of the Republican Guard, described as pro-Somaliland, including Lieutenant Colonel Mahamoud Egueh. These Djiboutian citizens of Isaaq origin are viewed as new opponents of Guelleh’s policies, and some are already under surveillance, including phone tapping.
A disguised purge is set to target Isaaq officers and NCOs within the Republican Guard. Some will be forced into early retirement, others transferred to different branches of the nation’s uniformed services, while a final group will be accused of various offenses and struck off the army rolls.
