Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are expected to soon be equipped with electric gloves that can deliver an electric shock to a person while officers are carrying out their duties.

ICE plans to spend up to $20 million to purchase the equipment, known as GLOVE, according to a document released Monday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The gloves can reportedly deliver an electrical charge of up to 380 volts, which is roughly three times the voltage supplied by a standard electrical outlet in the United States.

Civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), have expressed concerns about the use of the equipment. ICE is already facing scrutiny and criticism over the tactics used during its operations and law-enforcement activities, including incidents in which officers have shot several people.
