Memorial Tribute to Our Late Father Minyiel Rou Deng Kur
21 Years of Remembrance (1934/1935 – 9 January 2005)
By Dr. Rou Manyiel Rou (Routhei)
On this day of remembrance, we honor the life, service, and enduring legacy of our late father Minyiel Rou Deng Kur; a farmer by origin, a historian by calling, a cultural voice by gift, a civil rights activist by conviction, a peace builder by principle, and a judicial leader by trust.
Minyiel Rou belonged to a generation of Ngok Dinka elders whose lives were inseparable from the land of Abyei and the memory it carries. Born in Ɣany village of Ŋoɔl between 1934 and 1935, he grew up shaped by farming, cattle culture, and the moral discipline of communal life. From these roots, he cultivated a lifelong devotion to truth, justice, and collective responsibility.
Though denied early formal education, Minyiel Rou refused to be limited by circumstance. Through adult education and self-discipline, he attained literacy and transformed it into a tool for service. He bridged the world of oral history and written record, becoming a trusted custodian of Ngok Dinka historical memory at a time when erasure and distortion threatened the identity of Abyei.
As a singer and song composer, he preserved history through voice and rhythm. His songs were not merely entertainment; they were living archives, carrying stories of land, struggle, dignity, and unity across generations. In times when public expression was restricted, his music kept memory alive.
His commitment to justice found expression in public life. In the 1970s, he served as Chairman of the Sudan Socialist Union Youth in Abyei, mobilizing young people and advocating for community interests within a restrictive political system. For speaking truth and defending rights, he endured repeated arrests, including a year-long detention from July 1977 to July 1978 without trial. Yet repression neither silenced nor embittered him; it deepened his belief in peaceful advocacy and principled leadership.
For more than twenty years, Minyiel Rou served as President of the Abyei Town Court, becoming a pillar of local justice. His court was known for fairness, accessibility, and wisdom harmonizing customary law with statutory principles and earning the trust of ordinary people during times of political uncertainty. Through justice, he helped hold the social fabric of Abyei together.
Beyond official titles, he was a civil society leader and peace envoy. He participated in community dialogues, represented Abyei residents in national forums, and contributed to collective petitions and negotiations. As a member of the Ngok Dinka of Abyei Community delegation to the Sudan peace process, he carried the historical claims and aspirations of his people to Nairobi. In 2003, he joined those who visited Dr. John Garang de Mabior and the SPLA/M leadership at New Site, articulating Abyei’s truth directly to the leadership of the liberation movement.
Minyiel Rou believed that peace could not be imposed from above; it had to be rooted in memory, justice, and community consent. His life embodied this belief.
On 9 January 2005, in Abyei Town, Minyiel Rou Deng Kur passed away only hours after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). The timing of his death carries profound symbolism: an elder who labored for peace departed at the very moment peace was formally declared. Though he did not live to witness its unfolding, his life helped make it possible and surely he carried the message to our martyrs and ancestors.
Twenty-one years later, his legacy endures in the songs that still echo, in the histories still told, in the court decisions remembered for their fairness, and in the values he embodied: integrity, courage, learning, and service.
We remember our father Minyiel Rou Deng Kur not only for what he did, but for how he lived, anchored in land, faithful to truth, and committed to peace.
May his memory remain a guiding light for us and Abyei.
May his life continue to teach future generations.
And may his soul rest in eternal peace.
Gone from sight, present in history.
