One year anniversary of peace signed between two feuding subclans successfully celebrated in Akobo County

On 29th of September 2024, USAID Shejeh Salam supported the commemoration of one year anniversary peace signed by Chie-Bhol and Chie-Mankhoat subclans. This agreement brought to an end a eight years conflict which killed over 43 people from 2015 – 2024. The commemoration was attended by over 600 participants comprising of youth, women, faith-based group, traditional chiefs, local authority and NGOs representative. The event was proceeded by two one day peace rallies organized in Wech-goak and Meer inhabited by the two former enemies. During the celebrations, people danced, key stakeholders gave speeches which promoted peaceful co-existence, and the two clans feasted together for the first time.
The following are some resolutions agreed in 2023 which the parties have recommitted themselves to observe:
1. The two subclans accepted to forgive each other and leave the past and promised to not revenge.
2. They had agreed to pay the blood compensation for the people that were lost during the conflict.
3. The subclans agreed that hate songs and speeches shall be stopped immediately.
4. Chiefs from each community shall collect cows from their people and report to the county authorities within the agreed timeline. Any chiefs failed to collect the blood compensation cattle on the agreed timeline shall be suspended.
5. Local authority shall supervise the payment of blood compensations. After compensations are completed, the elders shall perform ritual to pronounce a curse on whoever recompose hate songs and or carry out revenge against each other.
6. The two subclans shall adopt restorative justice approach whose aim is rebuilding the broken relationship.
7. They also agreed on the free movement of all people including perpetrators from both sides, they will allow their educated sons to return back home after they were displaced by this violent conflict.
8. Villages were deserted due to violent conflict will be re-occupied by the very people who used to live there before as a result of having peace without fear in town and elsewhere in Akobo.
9. Importing of Ouzo (wine) from Ethiopia and use of Bhang (Ma*****na) should be banned by local authority because they make people commit crimes unknowingly and also fuel revenge killings.
Speaking with 98.5 Akobo FM, after the dialogue. Deng Reat, is the youth Leader from Chie-Mankhoat and he said what we have done today is a peace dialogue between Chie-Wooh and Chie-Bidiet. We have concluded today after three days. We love this peace all of us as the youth and nothing shall happen again.
Reat added that no one will ever start a fight again. According to what I have seen from them because I have been with them days and night. We have gone to Wechgok and Meer and I am very happy with the youth. What I can tell them is that lets stop all forms of revenge killings.
We have seen all the celebrations (are being done by Choirs every Sunday) and before we used to celebrate our normal celebration anytime we want and nowadays no more and the only place for celebration is the church this is because of revenge killings among ourselves. We need to go back to our normal life and my big advice to you is that lets love peace and let there be no fight again and on our side as Chie-Bidiet from Nyandit nobody is going to die again.
For his part, Thijin Ruot, is also a youth leader from Chie-Bhol clan. He said what we have been doing today is a peace dialogue between Chie-Biliew and Chie-Bhol. All the people of Akobo are so happy for how this two subclans have forgiven themselves. When we arrived in the county hall, according to how I saw their faces, I cannot doubt anything from their eyes on both sides. All I can tell the community of Akobo is that we the two subclans have forgiven our themselves and the rest of the clans having the same issues should also forgive themselves.
Martha Nyachieng Chuol, she is one of the elder whom who attended the meeting. She is very happy of what had happened. I am very happy with this peace agreement. We have suffered for so many years in search of peace and our children have been killing themselves and we have been suffering of hunger too.
Today our children have agreed to never fight again, I have seen peace in them. Secondly, they have agreed to be together. Our radio has been supporting our voice to reach this agreement and we are happy for today for that.
I can tell the community of Akobo to stop fighting and the rest of the world should know that we have peace and we are one family. Our children or brothers from Chie-Bhol and Chie-Mankhoat have forgiven themselves and this serves as an example to the rest having cycle of killings to do the same and forgive yourselves.
This dialogue has been supported USIAD Shejeh Salam through GEC, 98.5 Akobo FM and plus other partners. The county peace committee and the entire Akobo County Local Authority has also played bigger roles in this initiative.

Today, on 21 September 2024, the International Day of Peace has been celebrated in Akobo. Youths, women, community members, and NGOs have gathered to commemorate the day. The leading organization is GEC.

The theme says: "Cultivating a Culture of Peace." This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace.

In that declaration, the United Nations’ most inclusive body recognized that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”

In a world with rising geopolitical tensions and protracted conflicts, there has never been a better time to remember how the UN General Assembly came together in 1999 to lay out the values needed for a culture of peace.
These include: respect for life, human rights and fundamental freedoms; the promotion of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation; commitment to peaceful settlement of conflicts; and adherence to freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations.

The Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) starts with the notion that “wars begin in the minds of men so it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed”.

It is this notion that framed the theme and logo of this year’s observance of the International Day of Peace. The ideas of peace, the culture of peace, need to be cultivated in the minds of children and communities through formal and informal education across countries and generations.

The International Day of Peace has always been a time to lay down weapons and observe ceasefires. But it now must also be a time for people to see each other’s humanity. Our s

UNMISS Peacekeeping Force Commander in South Sudan visit Akobo County

On 4th September 2024, the UNMISS peacekeeping force commander in South Sudan visits Akobo County for the fourth times. General Mohan came to Akobo purposely to visit the UNMISS peace keeping force in Akobo. His arrival was graced with a welcoming ceremony which was held today in the UNMISS residence adjacent to Akobo airstrip.
Speaking on 98.5 Akobo FM, Hon. Puok Nyang Tutjiek, put forward a lot of problems that facing people of Akobo and that the UNMISS would lend a hand to if possible. Among such issues was the imminent flooding, the need for quick impact projects like the construction of the prison, leveling of Akobo airstrip, d**e, road construction of the major road among others. General Mohan in response expressed the commitment of UNMISS to give a hand to the people of Akobo despite budgetary constraints.
He also expressed his happiness with the peace efforts and the stability in Akobo East. He however was concerned about the constant violence in Walgak and the surrounding areas. General Mohan also reminded the people of Akobo to remain hopeful about the progress of peace in South Sudan despite the fact that various benchmarks in the peace agreement had not been achieved in the prescribed timeframe. He also expressed UNMISS’ readiness along with other partners to supplement the governments’ efforts in fighting against floods in the country.
For his part, General Mohan - UNMISS force commander in South Sudan. Says this is my 4th visit to Akobo and I am happy to see that the security situation in Akobo is more stabilized whereas there are issues of concern in Akobo East and there is also problem because the area where there is a lot of violence is Walgak and neighboring areas unfortunately that cannot be reached from here.
Mohan, told Akobo radio that when brigade commander of IO brigade is here whereas his troops are on the other side of the river. So, accessibility is a major problem here otherwise I do see progress in terms of peace in Akobo County particularly in the East. Definitely you are aware of the Uror action for developing peace between the affected communities is ongoing; there is also supposed to be a visit on 21st recently that got delayed but didn’t happen, so the process is on.
As soon as the flooding is concerned, we are committed to be as of much help as possible to mitigate the effect of floods. You know we cannot do massive flood mitigation works everywhere in the country; it is the primary responsibility of the government. Other humanitarian partners and us we will join together to supplement the efforts of the government to the extent possible.
We will be of as much help as possible. But then the same factors apply to us as well, the shortage of resources, shortage of funds and the inadequacy of guarantying roads; these apply to us as well but we will try our best to see that the airstrip is put to purpose and we will try to ensure that the flooding is minimized. Definitely, there should be strong hope by all people of South Sudan including those who are in Akobo County.
Definitely the direction that all stakeholders are taking is right; the only thing is that the various benchmarks that had to be achieved as per the peace agreement had not been achieved in the time frame that had been prescribed but then it is a very difficult process so I am sure everybody is working towards achieving them fastest and I am sure it is not a question of if, it is only a question of when peace will return to South Sudan and once peace develops it is only going to be few decades when this country will go towards seriously fast pace development.
