Severe flooding in Lesi and Dari Payams of Mvolo County of Western Equatoria has destroyed several farms, worsening food insecurity in the area.
At least 35 feddans of crops have been lost, threatening families who rely on seasonal harvests for food.

The flooding has also displaced dozens of families living in low-lying areas. Many are now sheltering in schools and at the flooded headquarters of Dari Payam, according to county authorities.

New Crops Begin to Be Eaten in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State

Communities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, especially in Aweil, are celebrating the arrival of their new harvests, which are now ready to be eaten.

In this region, August and September traditionally mark the start of fresh crop consumption, a period that helps families secure food and reduce hunger.

A resident shared his excitement on Facebook, writing:
"We are enjoying our new crops. It’s a season where everyone is freed from hunger."

This joy follows months of hardship caused by soaring food prices. Recently, a tin of sorghum sold for SSP 15,000, making a 50 kg sack cost SSP 450,000 a price beyond the reach of many households.

The new harvest is now providing relief, restoring both food supplies and hope for communities across the state as they look forward to better days ahead.

Bank of South Sudan, UAE Central Bank Sign MoU to Boost Financial Cooperation

The Bank of South Sudan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates to strengthen cooperation in security printing of banknotes, payment card systems, and technical training.

The deal was signed by Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, and Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, Assistant Governor of the UAE Central Bank, witnessed by Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel and Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan.

Through its subsidiary “Omlat,” the UAE will provide advanced solutions for banknote printing, while “Al Etihad Payments” will help develop a national payment card system in two phases, enabling domestic processing and building local infrastructure.

The agreement also includes expertise exchange and staff training via the Emirates Institute of Finance. Both sides said the partnership will modernize South Sudan’s financial sector and strengthen economic ties between Juba and Abu Dhabi.

Northern Bahr el Ghazal teachers demand official’s removal over unpaid wages

July 15, 2025 – Aweil

Teachers in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are demanding the dismissal of Director General Velantino Anei Deng over unpaid salaries. The Teachers’ Union says educators in Aweil East County have not received wages for April, May, and June, while others across the state await payment for May and June. Aweil Town teachers confirmed the delays, though April salaries were recently paid.

Union leader Kondit Deng Kon blamed the ministry for failing to disburse funds. However, Deng denied the allegations, calling them false and stating the union has no authority to seek his removal.

Despite allocating 5.4% of its 2024/2025 budget to education, South Sudan faces a severe cash shortage, leaving civil servants unpaid. The Ministry of Finance has acknowledged the liquidity crisis but offered no solution, worsening economic hardship for teachers.
