: Is Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth taking the people of South Sudan for granted, or he is just a spoiled son of the SPLM?

By Ateny Wek Ateny

“If anybody is complaining of (high mobile tariffs), refrain from using the telephone because it is not compulsory. If you feel that you are being overcharged, you refrain from using it, and this will give us an opportunity to learn how to use the telephones because there are people who use telephones for conversation for over 1/2 or 3hrs”. (Michael Makuei Lueth).

To whom the above statement was addressed to, and whose interest was Hon. Michael Makuei protecting? Was the issue of some people having the audacity to speak on phone for hours the cause for increasing tariffs? Who owns telephones companies, in South Sudan? If, in fact Hon. Makuei was addressing South Sudanese to whom more than 70% are youth, then how is he feel representative of the government that may one day seek the votes of those he sarcastically addressed?

It seems, Hon. Makuei is oblivious to the fact that, the role of the Ministry of Information, Telecommunications & Postal Service is to regulate telephone companies, internet servers and the communication system in the country.

While the government owns Fiber Optic which transmits telephone signals, internet communication and cable television signals, the Ministry serves as regulatory body that protects the interests of the very public Hon. Makuei was not showing to them any slight respect . In that, the Ministry of Information, Telecommunications & Postal service is failing public interest.

To see Hon. Michael Makuei speaking as if, he was the representative of the telephone companies, was not only q***r, but unbecoming. That statement which urged people to stop using telephones because they were not forced to, was far fetched and wanting to say the least. Failure to regulate telephones and internet services to increase tariffs at whim has further aggravated the already poverty stricken youths. Hon. Makuei should not joke.

Cognizant of Hon. Makuei longevity in government since 2005, I am sure he might have realized he has no match in this country. I said this when I wrote about Dr. Martin Elia Lomörö’s poor statement in the parliament which implicated the President, sometimes this year that breastfeeding a child for long is in itself an aggressive process. The same thing might be also affecting Makuei. A child that missed being weaned for any reasonable time, often think he/she has outsmarted his/her own parents.

Makuei and Martin Elia have overstayed in government to the point that, they have forgotten how politicians who appointed can be relived. They think the government can’t function without them. That is why they can say what the President himself has never said. Imagine, a government yearning to go for elections is telling its citizen to do without telephones in the 21st century. The telephone users in South Sudan may account to more than 60% of the total adults, of which 70% of this are youths. If, we want them as our voters comes the elections, then Makuei must learn on how to smart talk them, instead of this kind of rhetoric. Makuei doesn’t own the country to think we are his mere subjects. We are citizens equal to him in front of law.

Finally, as Minister in an institution tasked to regulate telephone operators, Hon. Makuei must tell the telephone service providers to review their tariffs, particularly on internet service. Internet anywhere in the world is nowadays the cheapest, except the countries where the likes of Makuei Lueth are the one responsible for telephone service regulatory body.

Otherwise, if Hon. Makuei is protecting the telephone service providers, then, he must have been in the wrong place. He should resign and leave this for a South Sudanese who cares about the welfare of his fellow citizens than this spoiled Makuei. Nearly 20 years as Minister is too much, as if, he alone makes what is Bor community.

RECENT NEWS: Governor Ubeer Chairs Third Disaster Risk Management Council Meeting Amid Ongoing Flood Crisis

Governor Simon Ubeer Mawut chaired the third meeting of the Disaster Risk Management Council at the state General Secretariat, focusing on the challenges posed by recent flooding in the region On September 24, 2024, in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

The meeting featured a report from the state Minister of Trade and Investment, Hon. Mary Nyakaka, who outlined the latest efforts to stabilize food prices through assorted food imports. These supplies are also intended for distribution to individuals severely affected by the floods. The Council engaged in discussions regarding the logistics of delivering this relief to the impacted communities, particularly those in areas like Dokul, Akuem-Kou, which were cut off by heavy rains Monday.

Following thorough deliberation, the Council resolved to establish committees tasked with overseeing the distribution of food to the most affected populations. Governor Mawut stressed the urgency of this initiative, stating, “We are committed to ensuring that assistance reaches those in need as swiftly as possible.”

After the meeting, Governor Mawut and Council members traveled to Akuem-Kou in Aweil East County to assess the damage to infrastructure caused by the floods. Speaking to Aweil Citizen Media reporter on-site, the governor expressed gratitude toward the ARC company for their rapid response in repairing affected roads. “The significance of this highway cannot be overstated; it connects Aweil East and Aweil North to the state capital. We must prioritize its renovation and modernization to facilitate the movement of people and goods across our state,” he said.

The situation continues to evolve, and the Governor reiterated the state government's commitment to addressing the challenges posed by flooding and ramping up the resilience of local infrastructure in the state.

By: Ateny Wek Ateny

The resumption of killing of civilians along Nimule Highway by NAS or those affiliated to tribalistic rebellion, has proven how savagery and ignorant the attackers are. The killings of civilians cannot be justified whatsoever. NAS has time and again, opted to remain outside the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan, and also on Tumaini Peace Initiative in Kenya. It is no longer known as to what Gen. Thomas Cirilo Swaka is looking to achieve.

Targeting civilian transport is a serious criminal act and this does not seem to bludgeon government to succumb to Cirilo’s tribalist agenda. Sooner or later, Thomas Crilo would be declared the South Sudan’s Kony, and his organization would be the Lord Resistance’s Movement. The international community must consider this – the early the better.

The recent killings on Juba Nimule road are the worst to have happened along this road since 2020. The indiscriminate ambushing of purely civilian targets, with intention to kill and take the survivals as hostages, the worse act of crime against humanity. Imagine, a South Sudanese ambushing and killing his fellow civilians! To whom is NAS fighting to liberate now? Even this type of indoctrinate killings has failed tribalism. Traveling on road from Juba to Uganda or from Uganda to Juba entertains no tribe or religion. All those who can’t afford to travel by air uses the road including foreigners. So, why ambush a civilian bus and burn it to arches?

I thought Gen. Thomas Cirilio was one of the few better trained Generals, until I saw his NAS ambushing a civilian transport bus. Who authorized this and what for? Don’t they know that all our civilians are suffering from economic downturn manmade by the elites including those in the rebellion? Why killing them, when government has trained soldiers that are based in their barracks countrywide? Or is this, because the civilians are the softest targets? A coward is always a coward even when trained.

Notwithstanding, the killing of civilians has set a very bad precedent. Anyone with AK47 hiding in the grassland of our Savanah Forest can ambush and kill civilians at whim. So, is it because those who rebels eventually come back home with the agreement that brought them as our leaders? But, what if the families of the victims of the intentional targeting of civilians refuses this time to accept or endorse any agreement that brings in the perpetrators of intentional civilian killings into government? Gen. Thomas Crillio must bear this in mind. Otherwise, our civilians can’t just be the sacrificial lambs of those greedy politicians/generals. After all, there was no reasons for General Thomas to have rebelled in the first place. What is he is fighting for?

Finally, I urge the International Community, led by UN, EU, AU, Trioka, and all Regional Organizations to pressurize Thomas Crilio and his NAS to peacefully join Tumaini and sign peace agreement. Otherwise, he should be sanctioned or declared the Joseph Kony of South Sudan.

FOCUS FEATURE: Concerns Raised Over Patient Care at Juba Teaching Hospital

An open letter from local journalist Ruot George W. Mut has brought attention to troubling practices observed at Juba Teaching Hospital (JTH), particularly in the maternity ward Monday, September 23, 2024. Mut's letter, addressed to the hospital management, details his experiences while accompanying his wife during her recent delivery.

In his letter, Mut commended the hospital staff for their commitment, stating, “I appreciate the whole fraternity of JTH for their dedication to saving humanity... sometimes with no electricity.” However, he expressed grave concerns about the involvement of students from local health institutes in patient care.

Describing a series of incidents during his wife’s labor, Mut recounted, “The student doctors... asked me to bring four people to donate blood as they claimed my wife had a low blood count.” This was despite lab results indicating her count was stable. He also raised alarms about a student’s inability to mix necessary medications, which led him to seek assistance from a senior midwife.

Moreover, he criticized the hospital’s reliance on student interns, stating, “Many lives are being handled by an experimental kind of operation by students on internship against ethical guidelines of health practice.” Mut recalled being pressured for a surgical intervention for his wife, which he declined, resulting in a successful natural delivery shortly thereafter.

He concluded his letter with a plea for hospital management to conduct surprise visits to ensure the quality of care, warning, “Many lives may be lost unknowingly.”

Mut's letter expose the muted issues within the hospital’s operations, raising urgent questions about the safety and quality of care provided to patients. The management of Juba Teaching Hospital has yet to respond to these allegations.
