Activist Edmund Yakani Welcomes Renewal of UN Sanctions on South Sudan

Prominent South Sudanese activist Edmund Yakani has welcomed the decision by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to renew sanctions on South Sudan.

The sanctions were recently extended after the UN Security Council expressed concerns over delays in the implementation of the peace agreement and ongoing political and security challenges in the country.

Reacting to the decision, Yakani said the sanctions would remain necessary until South Sudan's leaders demonstrate a stronger commitment to implementing the peace agreement and addressing the root causes of conflict.

“CEPO welcomes the renewed UNSC sanctions on South Sudan,” Yakani stated.

He further argued that continued political and military conflicts among the country's leaders have contributed to the extension of international sanctions.

Yakani serves as the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) and is known for advocating for peace, accountability, and democratic governance in South Sudan.

The renewal of sanctions continues to generate debate among citizens and political observers regarding its impact on the country's peace process and future stability.
