Press Statement on Reconstuition of High-level Committee of Abyei
The National Initiative for Support the Ultimate Solution of the Status of the Abyei is welcomes the Republican decree to reconstitute the high-Level Committee of the Final Statu Abyei, chaired by Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, Vice President and Chair of the Economic Cluster, and his deputy Gen. Pieng Deng Kuol, Minister of East African Affairs, and the membership of the competent institutions.
While welcoming this decree, the Initiative calls on the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Bol Mel, and its distinguished members to expedite the holding of internal meetings with the parties concerned to consult on the necessary solutions to the Abyei file.
The initiative also calls on the leadership of the committee, based on its firm principle of the need to adopt the result of the 2013 Dinka Ngok referendum, or even to work to annex the Abyei area by an administrative decision, as it was previously transferred to Kordofan in 1905, and to call for the adoption of a joint working method and the creation of effective mechanisms that will rebuild trust between the government and the citizens of South Sudan in the Abyei area, foremost of which is the provision of security and stability, and to give the highest priority to resolving this file.
The initiative's work during the past period has been guided by the approach of the sub-activism (lobby), through which it has been able to unify the opinion of civil society on the Abyei file, and gain the support of a number of influential leaders in order to serve the interest of the final solution.
The National Initiative to Support the Ultimate Solution of the Abyei area reiterates its full commitment to support the efforts of the national leadership and the government in their efforts to achieve comprehensive peace and lasting stability in the Abyei region, in a way that strengthens the national unity and serves the aspirations of the people of the Republic of South Sudan towards a more stable and fair future.
