Tanzania Enforces Nationwide Security Measures Following Election Protests

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered all government ministries, agencies, and regional offices to remain closed, while urging the private sector to comply with stay-at-home directives. Only staff on essential and emergency duties—including health, security, power, and water services—are allowed to report to work.

The directive follows a nationwide night curfew (7:00 pm – 6:00 am) imposed after violent protests erupted over the general election. Police and military personnel confronted demonstrators in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Arusha, and other cities, using tear gas and, in some cases, live rounds to disperse crowds protesting election conduct and the detention or disqualification of key opposition figures.

Security patrols remain active, with roadblocks on major routes and reduced commuter traffic around strategic installations.

Communities in Bor Urged to Help Protect the Great Nile Migration

Local communities in Bor County, Jonglei State, have been urged to take the lead in protecting the Great Nile Migration — the world’s largest land mammal migration, which sees an estimated six million antelope move across South Sudan each year.

The call was made during a community workshop held in Bor County, organized by the conservation nonprofit African Parks, which trained residents on how they can contribute to preserving this extraordinary ecological event.

The migration route spans from Badingilo to Boma National Parks, cutting across Jonglei State, the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), and parts of Central and Eastern Equatoria.

Armed Youth Clash with SSPDF in Rumbek Town at Night

RUMBEK – A group of armed youth clashed with government soldiers on patrol in Rumbek town on Wednesday night, the Acting Minister of Information and Communication in Lakes State, William Koji, has confirmed.

Speaking to the media, Koji said the confrontation began when the youth, who were carrying fi****ms, entered Rumbek town despite a ban on civilians moving with weapons.

“The armed youth were moving at midnight with their guns, crossing Rumbek town. The SSPDF, who always patrol the town, advised them to put down their guns, but they refused. From there, they started shooting,” Koji explained.

She said no fatalities were reported, but one woman was injured in the crossfire.

Authorities in Lakes State have repeatedly warned civilians against possessing or moving with fi****ms within town areas, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety.
