Addressing Hate speech and violence in South Sudan
Telecom Hose, Juba -South Sudan
Monday 24th March 2025
In these challenging times, it is more important than ever to come together as a nation and address the pressing issue of hate speech and incitement to violence.
Media Authority is deeply concerned about the recent surge in hate speech and incitement to violence, particularly related to the conflict in Nasir County and surrounding arcas. This situation is worsened by the spread of misinformation, politically charged statements, reckless media reporting along ethnic lines, and the misuse of social media platforms. It is crucial for all stakeholders, including politicians, media outlets, and social media users, to act responsibly to prevent further escalation of violence and disintegration of our social fabric.
Unfortunately, in recent weeks, political figures have exchanged inflammatory statements that contribute to the fear of conflicts in the country. Such negative rhetoric intensifies tensions, and all involved must refrain from it to prevent further violence. Media Authority urges politicians to consider the impact of their words and avoid making inflammatory statements that could lead to more bloodshed.
The current conflict in the country appears to be political in nature. Media reports that focus on ethnic or tribal divisions put innocent lives at risk. It is essential for media outlets to engage in conflict-sensitive reporting that respects human rights and upholds the dignity of all communities. Media Authority encourages the media to promote independent journalism that avoids harm while serving the public interest.
The unthinkable misuse of social media to spread misinformation and disinformation is another major concern.
Such actions aim to further destabilize the country and sow distrust among the population. Social media platforms must be used responsibly, and users should be aware of the legal consequences of spreading harmful content.
Politicians and social media users must understand the legal implications of their actions. Those who violate laws by spreading hate speech and incitement to violence will be held accountable. Media Authority is committed to working with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served.
prioritized to support peacebuilding efforts and minimize harm.
Media Authority call on all levels of government to ensure the safety and protection of journalists. Authorities should allow unhindered access to information deemed to be in the public interest. Journalists should be able to carry out their work without fear of reprisal or violence while observing precautionary measures to minimize harm in the process of gathering news and information for the public.
Given the current situation, it is imperative that all stakeholders must collaborate to curb hate speech and incitement to violence in South Sudan. Media Authority remains committed to promoting responsible journalism and ensuring that media serves as a tool for peace and stability rather than promoting conflicts. All parties must work together to create a safe and informed environment for all the citizens.
Let's all unite to combat hate speech and embrace a culture of peace and tolerance so that we can coexist in harmony as one nation.
