A gold mine collapse in Nakiki Village, Kapoeta South County, Eastern Equatoria State, claimed 10 lives, leaving the community devastated. The incident occurred after heavy rains weakened the mine’s structure, burying miners working underground.

Juma Tigol, coordinator of the Civil Society Network in Greater Kapoeta, expressed frustration over the lack of action despite repeated accidents.
“Such incidents of mines collapsing have happened several times, and many people have died. The government should devise means for best mining practices and enlighten the communities on how to mine safely. The miners need to be trained in safe practices.”

Rescue teams have recovered five bodies so far, with five still trapped in a pit 8-9 meters deep. Doctor John Isaac, Medical Director at Kapoeta Civil Hospital, confirmed that the three injured miners are receiving treatment at the facility and are improving.
