The reported declarations add another dimension to the political landscape in Warrap State as South Sudan prepares for the 2026 general elections.

The current Governor of Warrap State is Ambassador Bol Wek Agoth, who has been in office since June 2025.

With several individuals now expressing interest in the governorship, the key question for the people of Warrap is:

Lt. Gen. Mathew Mathiang Magordit Joins Race for Warrap Governorship

Juba, Sept 25, 2026 - Former Governor of defunct Tonj State and former Assistant Inspector General of Police for Oil Field Protection, Lt. Gen. Mathew Mathiang Magordit has officially declared his intention to run for the governorship of Warrap State.

Gen. Mathiang made the declaration today, stating that he will contest in the upcoming December 22, 2026 general elections as a candidate of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM).

In his declaration, Gen. Mathiang said his candidacy is driven by a vision anchored on four key pillars: Security, Peace, Development and Prosperity for the people of Warrap State.

A seasoned security officer and administrator, Lt. Gen. Mathiang brings vast experience from both the military and police service. He served as Governor of Tonj State during its existence and later as Assistant IGP in charge of oil field protection, roles that gave him deep insight into governance, security and community challenges.

He said if elected, his administration will prioritize restoring lasting peace and security, promoting unity among communities, improving infrastructure and delivering development that ensures prosperity for all citizens of Warrap.

His entry into the race adds to the growing list of high-profile figures seeking to lead Warrap State as political activities intensify ahead of the December polls.

The National Elections Commission has confirmed December 22, 2026 as the date for the General Elections.
