Unity State: A Fragile State Looted by Its Own Citizens.
By; Gatwech Malith Riak Tutnyang.
At the time when His Excellency Riek Bim Top was appointed Governor of Unity State by presidential decree, the people celebrated—not because we loved Mr. Bim Top, but because we had grown weary of the failed leadership of former Governor Dr. Joseph Manytuil. His administration had disappointed the citizens, and we hoped for a new chapter.
Unfortunately, Governor Bim Top has proven to be no different—perhaps worse. He has now become what we call Nguentaban—a disappointing combination of both previous governors. The looting and scamming under his leadership, especially in the name of road projects such as Bentiu–Mayom and Bentiu–Leer roads, are unacceptable. His administration has had little or no involvement in these projects, yet he claims credit while enriching himself using the state's resources.
We believed that a transition from military service to political leadership would bring discipline and positive change. Sadly, the opposite has happened. Governor Bim has shown himself to be neither a capable politician nor a respectable military figure. Even his own officials suffer under his administration.
Today, the citizens of Unity State are confused and disillusioned. Some are beginning to say that even the former governors—the Nguentaban—were better because at least they offered some basic services to their officials. Meanwhile, Bim distracts the media with propaganda about development, while real humanitarian efforts are driven by NGOs, not his government. So where are the state’s resources going?
Yes, we acknowledge the slight calm and peace in the state—but that is our right, not a favor granted by the governor. Peace should not be used to cover up corruption. Some sycophants may praise him, pretending things are better. But we, the gallant intellectuals, see through the lies. We know this administration is taking us nowhere. It offers crumbs to a few while the rest get nothing.
Concern citizen.
